Correct me if I'm wrong but the Republicans' great accomplishment is that they are making those illegal aliens who have been here for 2-5 years take a road trip to El Paso, after which they still get to stay here?
Boy, that'll teach them to break our laws- a trip to El Paso. Pathetic.

Any Republican in a conservative state ought not to be planning to run for office again if he votes for this bill.

if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years. If this is the real compromise, then no one has anything to worry about. No illegal alien will be able to provide "work stubs", nor any other document to prove their residency. How many illegal aliens will learn English, and how many will want to pay back taxes.
I do not like amnesty, but if this is what the bill will look like, it is dishonest. Why not be honest and say, "No, there will be no amnesty" instead of giving them a set of hurdles so high they can't jump over it?

As usual (when it comes to immigration) I side with the prez on this one - looks like they've just renamed the guest worker visa - which is okay with me.
The more people the better - how else are we going to compete with China or India 50 years from now.

Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years. BOHICA!!
$2000!!? Is that all that American citizenship is worth? Can we just open it up to the highest bidders in the world, since we're going to cheapen it anyway, and actually make a few real dollars out of this...ahem...deal.

For decades politicians have refused to enforce immigration laws.
Now, there are too many illegal aliens (11-30+ million) to round up and send home.
We are rewarded with a new set of immigration laws that we are lead to believe will be enforced. Do you believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny?
We won't get a fence that would be tangible evidence of border enforcement.
Lastly, the illegals get amnesty.
What did we get out of the deal?

I think I'll get started running these documents off for my confederates in India.
We can probably run 500,000 or more people in here as soon as this passes, and if we only make $100 a head, we will be quite rich.
There really won't be much room left for more Mexicans ~ Indians will live 50 to 75 people per house for extended periods ~ much better than Chinese who peak out at 30, and the Mexicans at 10 to 15.
And I'm not being cynical at all. If Congress wishes me to be enriched, then I will take advantage of it.
