ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt can't seem to outrun controversy.
The freshman congresswoman is facing a complaint about the truthfulness of her education and her endorsements.
The Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes, or COAST, has endorsed Schmidt's opponent in the GOP primary, Bob McEwen. The group claims that some of Schmidt's claimed endorsements are bogus, and instead of two bachelor degrees as stated on various biographical material, she has one.
"If it was one incident, I might think there was some merit in letting it go," COAST's Jim Urling said. "But we've got a very troubling, disconcerting pattern of misrepresentations here."
Schmidt's chief of staff, Barry Bennett, denied any such pattern. He told News 5 that a staffer mistakenly credited Schmidt with a second degree while creating a Web site six years ago, when Schmidt was in the Ohio House.
Bennett said Schmidt's official Web sites were corrected a year ago.
However, News 5 found a mid-June survey from the League of Women Voters that reflects two college degrees.
An Anderson Township Republican trying to arrange a debate between Schmidt and McEwen said voters in the 2nd District are talking about the issue and taking sides.
"They basically feel politicians lie to them," Duffy Beischel said. "But when you get smacked in the face with a string of lies, I think it does hurt your candidacy, I don't care who you are."
The Ohio Elections Commission will hear the complaint Wednesday. Bennett said he expects it will be dismissed.

Ping
Thanks for ping.. wish more "leaders" had the guts that schmidt presents!
Jean Schmidt is the one who called out Murtha on the House floor.
This is an old, tired story and you know it. Typical garbage from COAST, who actually urged Republican voters to STAY HOME and allow the 2nd to go 'Rat last year. They nearly succeeded.
As far as I am concerned, COAST is a group of RINOs who deserted the winner of the primary last year like the sore losers that they are and showed their true colors -- yellow. I wouldn't turn my back on them.
Oh, by the way, we don't need a check-kiting former Congresscritter like McEwen who has been a DC lobbyist for years to take this seat. That crook got caught and now HIS supporters attack Jean Schmidt? No wonder COAST wanted the 'Rats to win the seat -- their tactics would make Ted Kennedy proud.
Schmidt corrected her website last year after a staffer screwed up. She never bounced checks on Capitol Hill like her opponent.
Nice try smearing her. If this is the best the Schmidt haters can do, good luck next month. She kicked your butts last year; she'll do it again.
As for McEwen, since he got caught in the check scandal he's lost to Ted Strickland, Rob Portman and Jean Schmidt. A three-time loser and a check kiter. Buh-Bye!!
Here's a story from last month that mentions the OHIO Elections Commission slapping down McEwen for misrepresentation:
http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/gov/2006/03/former-us-rep-mcewen-gets-public.asp
The follwing reply to that blog was priceless:
"Things keep getting worse for Carpet-Bagging, Check-Bouncing Bob McEwen. He should go back to his home in the DC suburb of Fairfax Station, Virginia. He has a home valued at $1,062,030 there. Yup, Fairfax County, Virginia records online show that McEwen has a MILLION dollar home in the DC suburbs. Does anybody believe that the $105,000 apartment in Anderson, that he bought less than a year ago, is McEwen's permanent residence? Carpet Bagging Bob needs to go home to Fairfax Station and his job as a lobbyist for foreign governments in Washington. Bob, years ago your check bouncing scandal cost the Republicans a safe seat to the Democrats. You then MOVED to the second district and LOST AGAIN to Rob Portman. You then MOVED AGAIN to Washington to become a lobbyist for foreign governments. Portman left his seat to join the President's administration and you then bought an apartment here so that you could claim you live here. Well, you were rejected again (3 times in a row?) by the voters and decided to come back to lose a fourth time. Don't insult our intelligence. Go back to lobbying for Uzbekistan and leave Ohio alone."
It should be added that the 'Rat McEwen lost to is none other than the presumptive 'Rat nominee for Governor, Ted Strickland. Yep, the same guy who might beat (hopefully) Blackwell -- who got his start when he beat McEwen.
You cite precisely why any criticisms of Schmidt and attempts to replace her with McEwen as a "better" alternative are patently ludicrous. McEwen's piss-poor record is right there in your posts for all to see. If Strickland wins the Governorship, we'll REALLY know whom to thank for helping him advance in his political career... and it won't be Miss Schmidt.
Mean Jean has been listing this "2nd" degree on her resume for her entire political career. This wasn't a one-time mistake from a staffer last year.
This is just the latest of many lies from the Taft and Spend RINO. Between her support of Bob Taft's failed agenda, her numerous lies, many ethical lapses, and poor performance in last year's election against Hackett, we should be smart enough by now to move on to the next choice. McEwen isn't perfect, but he's much better than Mean Jean.
That's hilarious.
After the Check scandal, McEwen is 0-3, having lost to Strickland, Portman and Schmidt. He can't even win a primary, much less a general election.
Mean Jean is 1-0 in House elections. Oh, but SHE's a loser.
many ethical lapses
Check kiting is pretty bad, I'll admit. We shouldn't tolerate a Congresscritter who does that -- and in fact, we didn't. Oh, sorry, that was McEwen, not Schmidt. My bad!
we should be smart enough by now to move on to the next choice.
Great! Glad to hear you are supporting Schmidt! Welcome Aboard!!!
If we want to talk about past elections, we could talk about Schmidt's loss all the way back in 2004. She had a lot more money and establishment backing, yet still lost her state Senate seat. Voters got it right then.
And if we want to talk about ethics, we could talk about the Letter of Exoneration that Bob McEwen, VP Cheney, and Jack Kemp received in 1993. Or we could talk about Jean Schmidt taking money from lobbyists in 2005 and not reporting it, or the two investigations against her by the Ohio Elections Commission.
COAST urged voters to stay home. That organization apparently wanted Hackett instead of Jean Schmidt.
Why should anyone listen to a political organization that encourages voters to boycott elections? What utter fools. They could have at least recommended that voters go to the polls and write-in Brinkman or McEwen or -- God help us -- Pat DeWine. But no -- they encouraged people to sit out. Apparently some of the lemmings on the Right bought into that strategery. That's on them, not Jean.
