With Republicans rallying to his cause, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has reclaimed a little more of his once-astronomical popularity, but winning re-election could still prove to be a tough slog.
A poll released Tuesday by the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University saw Schwarzenegger's approval rating climb to 45 percent among voters, up from 39 percent in January.
Most of that momentum is fueled by higher rankings among the GOP faithful, some of whom had been alienated by the Republican governor's more centrist actions, and Democratic hires, since last year's failed special election. But Republicans seem to have recovered from the disappointment; 70 percent of them now approve of his job performance, compared to 61 percent in January.
The liberal-leaning Bay Area is the only region where Schwarzenegger's popularity is still trending downward, from 37 percent in January to 30 percent now.
Schwarzenegger is running about even with his largely unknown Democratic challengers, state Treasurer Phil Angelides of Sacramento and Controller Steve Westly of Silicon Valley.

So why is it plunging in the liberal Bay Area? Did they all go conservative all of a sudden?
California, and the world for that matter, is turning super liberal, a dangerous pace.
He recently dished out some public works pork.... is this a surprise?
The more we hear from the Angelides/Westly crowd, the stupider, and scarier, they sound. No one in their right mind would allow them to win.
