The world today is full of evils that compete for our outraged attention. In Sudan, genocide is underway. Closer to home, in Castro's Cuba, political prisoners languish in fetid jails. But at Macalester College, some students are crusading against the friendly folks at Coca-Cola through an initiative called the "Campaign to Stop Killer Coke," the latest cause du jour on "progressive" campuses.
Last week, the students announced that Macalester's Social Responsibility Committee had voted unanimously to ban Coke from vending machines and fountain-drink locations on campus. Macalester's president must sign off on the ban for it to take effect.
Mac's Student Labor-Action Coalition (SLAC) charges Coke with a loose and shifting set of allegations. The claims grow from the death of a labor leader at a Coke plant in Colombia 10 years ago, and the deaths of seven other Colombian Coke workers.
Here's the context: Colombia -- one of the world's largest suppliers of cocaine -- is torn by civil war between murderous factions that fund themselves through drug trafficking. Many thousands have died in the conflict.
Danny Kaplan, a math professor and former chair of the Social Responsibility Committee, is among those at Macalester who aren't impressed with SLAC's charges about Coca-Cola's culpability. "The evidence is so slight, so implausible and in some cases so silly," he says, "that it's clear the allegations are politically motivated."
Ah pesky facts. For many activists, one suspects, Coke's real sin is being a big U.S. corporation, a "multinational" -- guilty until proven innocent.
Coke's attempts to refute the charges have fallen on deaf activist ears. The company points out that it is one of the most heavily unionized multinationals in the world, and that Coke managers, as well as union members, have been murdered in Colombia.

They can have my Coke when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.
That reminds me, I am running low on diet coke, I'd better go to Wal-Mart and get some, that way I can piss off the socialists twice in one trip.
Killer Coke!
How silly.
Make it a hattrick and get some ammo too!
And don't forget to use your Credit/Debit Card from Chase, Citibank, or Bank of America, or one of those huge banks. Go for the hat trick!

Exactly where in his post did he say or infer that? Perhaps YOU are the fruitcake.
Doesn't pepsi have the same market share as Coke?
Is Pepsi anti-american? Is that they they are never mentioned or just because Pepsi is just bad Coke?
You missed the point.

I thought the MST was a pinko paper that would accept any 'activist' notion, no matter how ridiculous. What happened?
Uh, and Pepsi's not a huge, multi-national firm?
Just wait until they find out that Coke mixes much better with liquor than Pepsi does. Who ever heard of a Bacardi & Pepsi? Ick.
Wally World is my second home. Where else can you buy shotgun shells at 3a.m. during dove season! Oh yeah, I can also pick up a case of COKE while I'm there!
