Hillary Clinton in Senate Poll Plunge (Here comes Spencer)

Tuesday, April 4, 2006 1:00 p.m. EDT Hillary Clinton in Senate Poll Plunge

Support for Sen. Hillary Clinton's reelection bid has suddenly plunged precipitously, with her lead over GOP challenger, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, dropping by 10 points, according to the latest Zogby poll.

In Zogby's January survey, Mrs. Clinton led Spencer among New Yorkers surveyed by a whopping 31 points, 61 to 30 percent. Quinnipiac and Marist College surveys taken in the intervening months have echoed that result.

But in a Zogby poll released Monday, Mrs. Clinton's lead had suddenly plummeted to 21-points, showing her with 54 percent to Spencer's 33 percent.

While Clinton's lead remains daunting - the dramatic erosion of support is sure to encourage the Spencer camp, which announced a national fundraising tour on Tuesday.

According to the New York Times, Spencer's message is that Mrs. Clinton has already begun her "presidential march" toward the White House - and that by damaging or defeating her now, the GOP would improve its chances of retaining the White House in 2008.

GOP presidential hopeful George Allen has already "signaled support" for the Vietnam combat veteran along with influential House Republican Tom Feeney, chairman of the House Conservatives Fund political action committee, the paper said.

Spencer is also said to be courting 2008 presidential contenders John McCain, Bill Frist, Rudy Giuliani and Sam Brownback.

In February, Spencer had a White House meeting with an aide to top presidential advisor Karl Rove. Shortly afterwards, Rove and Republican National Committee chief Ken Mehlman began publicly criticizing the former first lady as too "angry" and "brittle" to be elected president.

While Mrs. Clinton's 21-point lead still makes her the odds on favorite for reelection, some New Yorkers recall the case of another Empire State Democrat whose 24-point lead seemed even more daunting just six months away from Election Day.

Despite the staggering poll deficit, little known upstate "farmer" George Pataki went on to defeat Mario Cuomo that November.

Agreed. Unless she is found over the dead body of Bill with a bloody club, she wins in a landslide.

I don`t think he is a threat to her as I haven`t heard about any attempts on his life recently.

Classic poll politics. Create a FAKE poll with lower numbers.......and THEN, closer to election time, take another poll that shows a huge increase in support to make it SEEM like support for her is growing when it's actually stayed the same for the entire duration.

I am not so concerned with her winning as much as her not being forced to take an actual position that reflects her real views on the issues of the day. Spencer must force her into a corner and make her make statements that can be used at a later date. The ideal would be during televised debates, so she cannot go to the "I was taken out of context card."

With a determined effort, Spencer could win.

Don't be fooled into thinking every Democrat is in love with Hillary. Many can't stand her and would love nothing more than to see her go down in flames in 2006.

What she needs is a strong challenger. Not a single Democrat would come out against her, but the silence from some of the major players might be deafening.

I guess her pronouncement in favor of illegal immigration was not strong enough.

I think you underestimate the undercurrent of Democrat discontent with Her Heinous. It's there. It can be exploited.

They said Mario Cuomo was a sure winner too, and look what happened.........

My point is that even if Hillary manages to squeak out a win, she still loses because it shows she is vulnerable. This contest also isn't just in New York City. It's Statewide, and many, many parts of New York State are conservative, or far less liberal than Hillary.

Let's give Spencer our support and money. And let's stop with the defeatist attitude!!

On the contrary, maybe she'd lose some Democratic support, but I actually think that would help solidify her support among Republicans and moderates and prepare her way for a Presidential run.

you would need more evidence than that, she could always say that she found him dead and picked up the club.

Just what I did last week. I sent in money! I lived in Yonkers when Spencer was Mayor and he turned that city around from bankruptcy. He's a good solid conservative who got elected in a democratic city. He's going to smack Hillary silly.

You are so correct! As pointed out earlier Pataki was way behind and then beat Cuomo. Spencer looks like a great candidate, not like Lazio in 2000.

Now that is the proper attitude!! Send him money ( I understand his plan is to go nationally ) and talk positively about John Spencer.

Spencer CAN win if we can get the word defeatism out of our vocabulary!!

GO JOHN GO!!
