Yawn.

Pitty poor Mr. Bandow.

Someone told him GWB was a Conservative and he obviously believed them.

Why does everyone believe that they are more conservative than the next guy?

Yeah, I would rather have had President Gore or McCain in 2001. < /sarcasm >

Where was the conservative Republican candidate who ran against Bush in 2004?

Where is the agenda being led by the Republican majority? Need an even bigger majority? It'll never happen when the base decides to stay home for lack of satisfaction.

There sure seem to be plenty of anti-Bush screeds being posted lately. What's that about?

The author makes some good points but starts sounding like Teddy Kennedy about half-way through--but the Buchanan bunch tend to do that.

The best case they can make is that W has been a very mixed bag for conservatives. On the one hand, you have the vigorous prosecution of the war on terror, tax cuts, and Alito and Roberts. Not trivial accomplishments.

But on the other hand, you have CFR, runaway Federal Deficits, Prescription Drug Benefits, expansion of the Dept of Education, an almost astonishing indifference to illegal immigration, and a deliberate gelding of the conservative wing of the party, all orchestrated by the white house. Many of these represent a rejection of Reagan's and the founding father's fundamental vision.

But the author goes over the cliff into Teddy and Hill land with crap like 'unbridled hubris', 'betrayal,' and so on.

Sadly, I must agree with the author's tenants which is why it's so very critical to look at a person's policy positions instead of his or her electability because it will always come back to bite you in the arse.

I support President Bush, and I strongly supported him through two elections, but I'm very disappointed in his judgment starting with Meirs. Actually, it was earlier than that because I've been troubled by the huge deficits we are running for awhile.

I know the President advocated something akin to his current immigration proposal during the 2000 election, but I'm disappointed that 9/11 hasn't changed his mind concerning an open border policy. 20 years from now we will be discussing what went wrong with the 2006 amnesty plan. I also understand that 9/11 was a tremendous shock to not only our economy but the worlds as well. Stimulation of the economy was necessary to stave off a severe recession or worse, but that crisis time has passed. Why are we still running huge deficits when by every measure the economy is doing well?

Yes. Remember all those conservative bills that he vetoed? Give me a break. Our so-called majority in both houses of congress is a joke. I'm so fed up with the GOP I could puke. The last 2 times the RNC called me asking me for money I told them that I'd start giving money again when they grew a pair. The only reason I have for voting this November is to keep the President from being impeached. Period.

In reviewing Bartlett's book, Bandow writes his own book disguised as a book review which it AIN'T.

In doing so ,Bandow likely sets back the cause of conservativism to the Dark Ages portraying pigheaded stupidity as some sort of virtue to which all "right thinking Amuuricans" are just dying to return to.

As Martha Stewart would say: this is a "GOOD thing".
Bandow portrays conservatives the same way many Catholics describe heaven...filled with pious sorts you wouldn't give the time of day to here on earth.

For the enemies of Bartlett, REJOICE! Bandow has disposed of your enemy for you. Will someone show Mr. Bandow to the door?

Since you and I aren't running for office, or at least I'm not, we are forced to choose among those who are. Sadly, none of them are as smart as I am, or as dedicated to my principles.

But, then again, as "centrist" as Bush is, he only just barely managed to get elected, thats running against a certifiable nutcase like Gore in the first instance, and a Jane-Fonda-Democrat in the second instance.

I doubt seriously if a true classic-liberal-classic-conservative could get elected dog-catcher in this country.

Still, given the choice, I am very glad it wasn't Gore or Kerry sitting in the White House, on security issues alone.

That doesn't mean that we have to sit silent while he tries to out-Kennedy the Kennedys. We are quite capable of walking and chewing gum, we can support him when he deserves support, and scream when we need to. Screaming when he back-slides should give no comfort to the Democrats, since we are screaming when he is too much like a Democrat.

This is what is deceptive about Bush's low ratings. His loss of support does not in any way translate into support for Democrats.

Government is bigger, spending is higher, and Washington is more powerful. The national government has intruded further into state and local concerns. Federal officials have sacrificed civil liberties and constitutional rights while airily demanding that the public trust them not to abuse their power.

The U.S. has engaged in aggressive war to promote democracy and undertaken an expensive foreign-aid program. The administration and its supporters routinely denounce critics as partisans and even traitors. Indeed, the White House defenestrates anyone who acknowledges that reality sometimes conflicts with official fantasies.

In short, it is precisely the sort of government that conservatives once feared would result from liberal control in Washington.

Bears repeating, on a daily basis.

“Government is bigger, spending is higher, and Washington is more powerful.”

... “Bush’s insistence on absolute, unquestioning loyalty, which stifles honest criticism and
creates a cult of personality around him.”

“The administration and its supporters routinely denounce critics as partisans and even traitors.”

...”Bush’s conservative image bears no relation to his actions.”

“Bush, Bartlett believes, is likely to be seen as another Richard Nixon “

Good points, however:
It’s unfortunate to compare Bush to Nexon -- one of the best Presidents this nation ever had.

I can't really argue with the points made in this article. But instead of engaging in defeatist thinking, I've decided to do something about it:

1. Support Free Republic! There's a freepathon underway and the exchange of ideas that this site provides is really critical to the future of our nation.

2. Give $100 to save America - donate to Tom Tancredo.

3. Vote for Republican party candidates who are conservative, and withhold my vote from Republican party candidates like John McCain and George Bush who want to use the conservative base for non-conservative ends. It does not matter what initial sits besides the name of a non-conservative politician, and I refuse to be part of personal quests for power that betray my ideals in the future.

I hope you will join me.

Bruce Bartlett has been involved in conservative politics for a quarter century. He authored one of the leading books on supply-side economics, worked in the Reagan administration, and held a position at the National Center for Policy Analysis—until the Dallas-based group fired him, apparently fearful of financial retaliation arising from his sharp criticisms of the administration.

Finished the book "Impostor" that Bartlett wrote about a week ago. Devastating and right on target.

"The biggest problem is Bush himself, who—though a decent person who might make a good neighbor—suffers from unbridled hubris. His absolute certainty appears to be matched only by his extraordinary ignorance." Get stuffed, Doug, you closet bilgespittlist.
