Great quote. If I am not mistaken, he also said something very close to: "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon our enemies".

That was by George Orwell, and he has an even a better quote than that:

"The pacifist is objectively pro-fascist."

>>>"reminds me of the guy who won't kick in for pizza and then steals a slice when he thinks no one is looking">>>>

LOL Great line, I'm going to use it when my pacifists friends starts her whine about 'make love not war' crapola.

Years ago, an Anabaptist theologian named John Howard Yoder wrote a book called "Nevertheless: The Varieties and Shortcomings of Religious Pacifism" (BTW available, used, for under $10 from Amazon.com) where he distinguished I think 14 kinds of Christian pacifism.

I only mentioned this to say that pacifists do not all believe or act identically; neither should they be painted with the same brush. Some will cooperate with their nation's military in an unarmed capacity (e.g. as battlefield medics; but some are members of religious denominations who are convinced that they are forbidden by Christ to take ANY part in war (Amish, for instance.)

I would argue that those who use force justly (important adverb alert: justly) to stop aggressors and protect life and liberty --- that would be good soldiers and good police --- are doing necessary and morally upright work. They should be able to count on everybody's cooperation in some capacity. That doesn't mean everybody has to tote a gun, but that does mean that everybody should support them through cooperation, taxes, prayers, etc. because this is our obligation in order to defend the common good.

Comments?

Like many moral issues, "devil is in the details."

Good points.

"The pacifist is objectively pro-fascist."

To continue your quote:

"This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other. Nor is there any real way of remaining outside such a war as the present one. In practice, ‘he that is not with me is against me’."

People who aid and tacitly support the enemy's violence are not pacifists no matter what they call themselves.

These smarmy, international busybodies, the Gladys Kravitzes of the Iraq occupation, peering out at the world from behind the curtains with their pursed little disapproving lips?

Beautiful! LOL!!

I have a favorite quote, too, Nova. It's: The first step down into hell is to deny evil.

Thanks for that, I knew he elaborated on that, but didn't know what he said!!

If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other.

True!

That reminds me of the time I was physically threatened by a "pacifist" because I was holding up a sign that said

PACIFISTS ARE
FREEDOM'S PARASITES

If it was not for the "presstitutes" these low life scum protesters would not see the light of day.

I think most of them protest to feed their little ego's and increase their miniscule testosterone levels.

Tell your daughter that (thank God!) the rest of the world is not like Austin, and UT in particular.

I've heard complaints about geography classes before. Seems to be a particularly strident group of lefties in that department. I hope she makes A's and goes out into the world without having been brainwashed.

YW, I think Canada is more like the U.S...we just have more red States than they do.

P.S. I love Eric Hoffer.

This is the first time I have heard the act of sticking your winkie in another man's bum as " an abyess of love". This clown is pathetic and his 15 minutes of fame surely exhausted.
