A roiling sea of immigrants - many of them in the country illegally - and their supporters poured across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan yesterday to protest what they call "oppressive" reform measures currently under consideration in Congress.
Marchers, waving flags from Mexico, Colombia, Honduras and El Salvador, chanted and carried signs recalling America's roots during the demonstration, organized by state Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Bronx Democrat and native of Puerto Rico.
"That flag on top of the Brooklyn Bridge is symbolic because all these other flags, all these other nations, are covered by the USA," declared Ismael Claudio, 35, also a native Puerto Rican and therefore a U.S. citizen.
In the House, legislation already has passed that would set penalties for anyone who knowingly assists or encourages an illegal immigrant to remain in the country.
The Senate may adopt a broader bill that would be less punitive, create a guest-worker program and open a path to citizenship for the estimated 11M immigrants now in the country without proper papers.
As they trekked over the bridge, demonstrators carried signs proclaiming, "Did the pilgrims need green cards?"
Patricia Urgules, 35, of Ecuador, said......"I came here in search of the American Dream - the dream to be free, to be treated equally," she said. "We only ask for those basic principles this country was founded on."
Construction worker Eduardo Segundo, 40, of Harlem, scoffs at the notion, mentioned by Mayor Bloomberg last week, of a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.
He recalled sneaking across the border 12 years ago - and said 20 of his and his wife's relatives now live in the United States. ".....The wall that they build will not work. People will just figure out a way to cross."

Not to worry - our misrepresentatives will make sure a wall is NEVER built.
As an alternative solution, I propose we build a wall around DC. A big slick wall with no doors. We'll then cut off their phones, and after their cell phone batteries run out, they'll be cut off from the outside world.
"OMG! I think America is in deep trouble here. I don't like anything that I have been seeing. Not good. Not good at all."
The only thing that might save us is the illegals can't shut up about their "rights" and can't stop hoisting the Mexican flag to insult us. Had they just shut up, they'd have taken over, but now they look like a bunch of threatening thugs.
Same goes for France's islamonazis, they started protesting too soon.
If you are oppressed, go to a better country.
About the same thing as the megawatt stereo hammering out of otherwise nondescript cars (generally right next to me at an intersection).
About the same as dressing all in black with baggy calf length pants a ring in your nose.
Akin to having the only house on the street that is painted bright blue with red and yellow window frames and that twenty foot satellite dish right out in front.
Like always having to take the opposite side of any comment - and having zero basis in fact or even supposition to back it up with.
It means "I am here and I am really, really, cool despite never having done a damn thing during my life that might forward or even support anything not associated with my feeling of entitlement".
Oh, yeah, it's also a means to give society the finger for not realizing all those things in advance.
A wall has worked for Israel!
It is.
GWB has a handle on it, it is only now becoming shaky because the rest of the country is seeing the results.
Bush, whom I voted for twice, owes huge allegiance to illegal mexican interests.
Figure it out, Fox is [perhaps] the only foreign head of state that can cow our president into servility, and he can do it without breaking a sweat.
He comes from a part of Texas where you do NOT make it without cutting big time deals with each and every sponsor of illegal immigration; mexican, Tejano, and business.
What is so sorry about this mess is that he has NEVER hidden his intentions - we knew it all along.
And other posts are correct, it'll only get worse under a democrat president elected on an anti-unilateralism platform.
This is BS. I thought one of the requirements to becoming an American Citizen was to be able to speak English. If these people are hired at any fast food place and cannot speak English, that tells me they are NOT legal. And I blame the employers for hiring them in the first place.
And not knowing what to do, we remain as sheeple.
I always heard of America hiding out militias in the southern mountains. Are they still there? Not hiding out, but that is where they choose to live. I don't hear anything about them anymore. They wear the full military gear and hold meetings, etc. Remember them?
~sigh
I wish I had paid more attention. Fox News had on a Mexican honcho the other day, and he said that they picked a day this month and they are all going on strike. They will not be going to work, and they will not shop, etc, just to show America just how much we need them.
Darn! I wish I had paid more attention. I am concerned about the date.

Good Idea!!!!
Don't forget to shut down airport and the subways. Keep them all inside. Would take Ted Kennedy among the longest to starve, I guess. Too much fat....in more ways than one.
The Texas drivers license is good for 10 years before renewal. That is almost "never expires". I don't know if this was passed under Bush or not.
AMEN..... That makes me sooooo mad. Next item is having to repeat my order at least 3 times in a McDonalds, then another worker on the payroll has to come over and translate my order. I have walked out more than once, and will continue to do so.

There is a McDonalds in Northridge, in the San Fernando valley, Los Angeles, Calif. at Tampa and Nordhoff. As far back as 17 years ago, they were hiring counter attendants that only could speak Spanish. Then they had a translator with that employee translating from English to Spanish so that that worker could go get your order. A local big name drag race team had their shop within walking distance.
The crew chief had an absolute hissy fit when he tried to order for the team lunch under this set of circumstances. He stopped buying there over the issue. 6-9 guys a day for lunch, one block away. How much did it cost the store, along with the extra translator on the payroll?
I agreed with his hissy fit. I stopped going there, also, and I probably went there 2 times a week.
This isn't just a recent abberation. Employers should be hammered for these decisions.

I think it's scheduled for May 5th. which is Cinco De Mayo. It's already celebrated in America because it was a day when they defeated the French in a battle. Imagine that. Someone actually "beat" France. LOL More like they surrendered. :o)
I'm sure that this will be a huge victory celebration for them this year. Along with defeating France they have defeated the US government without a shot being fired.
You may be right. Now we look at them with more disdain and distrust then ever. Pity.
May first....
Ironic- May Day is the Communist/Marxist/Socialist "labor day".
I still like us using OUR INDEPENDANCE DAY for a serious shutdown.
