(CBS4) LONGMONT, Colo. Several students were under suspension for flying flags at Skyline High School in a debate over immigration that has sparked debates over free speech and patriotism.
On Friday, some of the students skipped classes and took to the sidewalks outside the school.
"If this country means freedom why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous," said Dustin Carlson, a suspended student.
The walkouts started on Monday when Mexican-American students began protesting the immigration bill now being debated in Washington, which calls for criminalizing illegal immigration.
Several carried Mexican flags which started counter protests from students who bore American flags. That's when the school stepped in.
Principal Tom Stumpf said students were becoming involved in what the school saw as bigotry.
Mexican-American student Lupita Silva claimed there were racial slurs and epithets.
"Just because you're Latino, they hate you," Silva said.
Stumpf said he feared the conduct with flags on schools grounds could "pretty quickly erupt into violence." He said it's his responsibility to ensure the school and students were safe and called reaction to the suspensions "misguided patriotism."
Several students were suspended but only after they were told no overt action deemed to be racial would be tolerated.
"It wasn't because of the flag necessarily. It was because of the fact that they had been warned before," Stumpf said.
You're missing the point. Your citizenship has just been revoked, because you have been deemed to be a threat to the other side.
The racism in Longmont is directed against Anglos, and the Anglos are forbidden from reacting. Where's the fairness in that? Hmmm?
Liberals are fascists; they don't believe in freedom unless it is a convenient way to prop up their POV du jour. Freedom is only a tool to them, not an end in itself.
Each quote deserves its own frame.
Here comes the next generation of patriots!
Woo-hoo! I love the image.
One senses that within thirty years - almost certainly within fifty - California isn't even going to _BE_ "California" any more.
It was nice while it was ours. But it increasingly looks like California isn't going to be "ours" all that much longer....

I'll twist your words.
In many schools, in how many states, is one permitted to walk around openly displaying the swastika flag of the Third Reich?
So, by your logic above, since schools may [reasonably] ban the display of the Nazi flag, they are _also_ required to ban the _American_ flag?
Go elsewhere with your nonsense.

I just posted this on another thread but it looks like it might be of some use in this one too:
The First Amendment protects the right of citizens to express themselves in a variety of ways. Public school students, as young citizens, may engage in many modes of expression from the words they speak to the ideas they write and even the clothes they wear.
Students can engage in political speech, which is considered the type of speech at the core of the First Amendment. The Founding Fathers considered such speech essential to the development of a constitutional democracy. The U.S. Supreme Court spelled out those rights in a case concerning public school students who spoke out on a major political issue of their time the Vietnam War.

Where does it say Hispanic students were suspended for
bringing their flags to school? It says the Principal
stepped in after American flags were brought to school
because it was seen as potentially a racist statement.
Since when did it become racist to display our American Flag on American soil??
The Mexican flag has no business being waved on our soil. I don't care.
Enablers of law breaking are just as guilty as the law breakers and they should be charged as such. it is not racist to enforce the laws of America.
This is going to get ugly if we don't get control of our borders and stop our pandering for votes congress critters.
"While in the meantime, kids in CA by the thousands were allowed hold pro Mexico National rallies on campus, with Mexican flags and were allowed to walk off campus, greeted by mayors and were provided bus transportation by the schools, all on taxpayers money!!!!
Folks it is a sorry day when our kids can can be penalized and threatened with arrest for being patriotic and loyal to the laws and sovereignty of the USA"
I agree. Any person should have the right to demonstrate at any time under constutional law, period. The students should respect the school rule of law also, it is this retarded principle who has no understanding of what being American is.
Or that you get more of something by taxing it.
1. We homeschool.
2. I'm not in charge of the school - the weak apologist Stumpf is. This is a leadership issue. His decision only draws the spotlight to the condition you describe - weakness in the face of bad behaviour for decades. Hundreds of similar decisions is how you end up here.
3. Any form of privatization or choice will naturally lead to a better situation, and more satisfied customers, and a better product - as it has in all other markets. I just thought of this - re public schools. Think about GM - how long ago did we know they could not compete on product? Ten years? Twenty years+? (Remember - trucks are protected by tarrif) - now look where GM is. How long have we known public schools were underperforming - ten years? Twenty years .... do the math. I'm rambling and going to bed.
I agree with the person who said, "If the Mexico flag had been prohibited immediately, there would probably have been no need to prohibit 'all flags.'" What those people did with regard to the US and the flag was disrespectful and illegal. So that disrespect should have been dealt with IMMEDIATELY.
I do believe that people should be allowed to leave their unsatisfactory country and come LEGALLY to the USA for the American Dream. BUT they should be willing to embrace the laws of this dream country. They come because the USA is better -- so they should expect us and want us to do our best to keep it as it is -- not to let it be flooded with people wanting to change it into another Mexico (or whatever). FLYING the MEXICO FLAG OVER THE UPSIDEDOWN US FLAG -- EXCUSE ME! That's hardly the way to convince the US to keep those persons. If the Mexico flag is better than the US flag to someone -- they should go back home and fly it proudly. If the USA is where they prefer to be -- then come here legally and fly Old Glory proudly.
Banning the American flag on American soil.
And you don't see a problem with that.
