LOL. I always have liked that saying although the first time it heard it the "by reality" part was left off (implied, I guess).
Yes, there is nothing like a sharp encounter with real human nature to make the scales of self delusion and wishful thinking drop from your eyes.

I've heard it said that a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged by reality. My dad (quoting someone, I'm sure) said that a liberal is a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet and a conservative is a liberal who hasn't been arrested yet.
