Former hostage Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.
In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But Carroll said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.
"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.
"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

No surprise that she is now "correcting the record" now that she's out of harms way. I suppose that faked-up interview was part of the condition of her release?
Same here. She's alive because she bit her tongue and only said words to shield herself from harm.
I am glad to hear her say this and reveal the true nature of her captors. I know her family is happy to have her back, and believe that although naive, and perhaps misguided in her initial venture to Iraq...she now sees things with an entirely new set of reading glasses on. So terrible that her interpreter died in the process of her lesson, leaving a wife and children behind.
If she was so concerned about the Iraqi people why did she not go there and report what was going on under S.H? Was she afraid shed get her little butt shot off? Why does she not go to Iran and report the conditions under that government? This is a hate America first person.
I hope she recovers mentally and emotionally from her ordeal. She looks like she's been brainwashed. It'll be a long road back for her.
Well come now. Who are you going to believe? Armchair 'generals' doing their 'duty' by calling in to Hannity to badmouth this poor girl or the person who lived through it? I believe her 100 percent.
< Talk is cheap... >
I guess you didn't see my disclaimer. I'm not at all sure that I could do it and I said so. It was all just speculation.
Personally, I figure because I'm an American, have no media ties or bleeding heart liberal beliefs, they are going to kill me anyway. I think I'd rather just get it over with.
Of course none of us really know what we would do. I was only stating that if they point a gun at my head, I'd prefer that over beheading. Is that clearer?
You added someone elses quote to your response to me. I was not the person who said they did not believe her. I just want to make that clear.
Myself? I'm not sure what to believe about Jill Carroll. It is clear that she is a sympathizer with the enemy. I'm just not sure that she is as much a sympathizer now as before. We must wait and see.
"I'm sure any romantic notions she may have had about the Middle East, its culture, and its peoples have now been thoroughly dispelled."
That was my thought too.
Her latest press release is very strongly worded.
I've heard it said that a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged by reality.
You cant compare the crew of the Pueblo to MS Carroll. She is a civilian, with no training on how to behave or duty to follow the rules of a POW. She is only a journalist, maybe a little Naive, but still a civilian.
I love to hear all these people who says" I would have spit in thier face rather than submit". It is easy to talk brave from the safety of the bar or workplace, but to really have this happen, I think most of the blowhards would pee themselves and do handstands if that is what the Muslims wanted. This does NOT apply to Military Personal, past or present{Of which I am}.
Until we hear otherwise, give the woman a break. rejoice in her not having her head removed, and pray to God that this never happens to you or your loved one.
Many young people start out idealistic (because of the garbage they are taught in public school) and are forced to see the truth when real life intervenes. Even people who are taught truth sometimes have to find out the hard way. The important thing is that people learn. She wanted to experience every aspect of Iraqi life - well she probably has now and wishes she hadn't. Let's just back off and see how this thing plays out in the days and weeks ahead. Even if she did start out as a willing participant (which I don't believe) I can't imagine she would still look at the situation the same way she did in the beginning.
I am personally very anti-war. However, I also believe that there are times when it is unavoidable. You just can't negotiate with terrorists. The only thing they understand is violence. The civilians in Iraq pay a terrible price for the violence of their culture and that of the imported terrorists from other countries, but they are choosing to be there and the American troops are providing a stability and protection at great personal risk. I wish they didn't have to be in harm's way - but it is necessary to have them there. Would I like them out? Of course! But not until they have done their job. I dare say Jill has seen another side of things by now.
You seriously need to read the article and her statement so you can stop looking so stubborn and misinformed. Then again, it looks like you've made up your mind and nothing will ever change it. Enjoy!
Just because she's a reporter doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. I'd have done the same thing (not that it would have done me any good!).
