Former hostage Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.
In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But Carroll said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.
"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.
"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

I suspect she "kidnapped" herself to have a "story"...
This all was very convenient. Too bad the interpreter died, but if the media concentrate on the reporter and not the loss in human life, it all has a happy ending.
So long as she is nowhere near a position of leadership, she can continue her worthless existence however she pleases.
But she didn't state what she really believes, just disavowed previous statements as "INOPERATIVE"
Lucky young lady.I just hope she's smart enough not to go back.
I believe her. Her statements the other day about the mujahideen were obviously not her own.
IMO this whole thing was staged, she should be arrested for the death of her translator, she's been living in Iraq for 3 years and I believe she is a terrorist sympathizer, I do not believe her latest statements were made under duress. She claims she was never threatened, treated well, etc. yet we have all seen the videos where she's practically in tears because she has been threatened with beheading. This does not pass the smell test.
All I know is this retraction will not count in the bureaucracy/mass. What is recorded is what is recorded. University studies and policy making will be based on the first statements.
A simple retraction by her is irrelevant. The media should retract the whole thing, but they will not. How convenient. In fact they should have waited before publishing this crap.
It's a catch22 double trap game:
The dupes get justified
The nondupes are told to appologize.
End of story of the operation: the nondupes are discredited and the dupes can still go on not appologizing.
This is a perfect leftwing orchestration anyway you put it.
"Fake! Fake! Fake! Fake!"
I believe Jill Carroll and if I had been in the same circumstances, I would likely have said anything to get away from my captors. I have heard callers to various talk radio shows claim they could never be compelled to speak out against America and the war effort and that they would rather die first. I am fiercely loyal to America and a strong supporter of our fight against terrorism, but in a circumstance like Carroll's, it is a far wiser course to do whatever it takes to be freed first and then to clear the air with the truth once freedom has become a reality.
Just heard a statement from one of her friends saying Jill will more than likely be going back to Iraq, well, imo, if that's the case, why are we spending $$$$ to bring her home? She is due here in Boston tomorrow morning to meet with her family and her employer, The Christian Science Monitor, I say, turn the freakin' plane around and dump her back in Iraq seeing as she's going back in the near future anyway (according to her "close personal source")
Judge her by her past from the Christian Science Monitor...
Her friends in Bagdhad note that she is motivated not just by her professionalism, but also by a love of Iraq, a country that she has come to call "home."...
"Jill has always wanted to know and experience as much as possible about Arab identity, and she is keen on absorbing it, learning, understanding and respecting it."...
"A few months after the US invasion, she left Jordan for Iraq, prompted by the desire to show to as vast an audience as possible the human tragedies caused by the war and the hardships of the Iraqi people."...
As Carroll was abducted, her interpreter, Allan Enwiyah, was murdered. The Monitor is assisting his family.
OK so they were false. I don't remember hearing during the airing of those statements that the video was released by her kidnappers.
So is she lying now, or before, or is it the MSM lying?
I have no idea what the truth is. But I know I would have said almost anything to avoid getting my head cut off, or a bullet put in it.
I'm glad she is out of there safe.
Wazzupwiththat?
If this is true, then I would be swayed towards this whole shabang being staged. If you had guns pointed at you with threats of death, then when you get out you point out that what you said was for the purpose of saving your life, this would pi$$ off the captors. Now you want to go back???? Where they will come after you again???
Yea, right!
You hit the nail on the head. This not only doesn't pass the smell test, it stinks!
She's as phoney as a three dollar bill.
clearly you didn't read the whole story. she said she was threatened repeatedly and called her kidnappers murderers. what is wrong with everyone about this story?
< I believe Jill Carroll and if I had been in the same circumstances, I would likely have said anything to get away from my captors. I kinda have a different take on it. I think, notice I said think, I would be willing to refuse to do as they say to a point, unless I was broken by continuous torture. However, I also think with the threat of beheading with a dull sword, I'd pretty much cave. Threaten to shoot me in the head...I might resolve to just be killed. Beheading is just a different matter.
You can't watch the Nick Berg video and not feel that way. I challenge everyone to watch it to put barbarism in the right perspective.
