Strategy used to curb voting
Carroll County Times ^ | 31 March 2006 | Editorial

Posted on 04/01/2006 6:27:12 AM PST by Nomorjer Kinov

Don't be fooled by Republicans in the state Legislature who are crying foul about Democrats turning back proposed laws that would require photo IDs before someone could vote because the measure has nothing to do with voters and everything to do with politics.

It's also a political strategy that the Republicans are using nationwide.

Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania are just three nearby states controlled by Republicans where the same tactic has been tried. In Georgia, the Republican-led legislature last year passed a voter ID bill, but a judge late last year ruled it unconstitutional.

The judge in the Georgia case likened it to Jim Crow-era restrictions that made black people prove they had paid their taxes before they could vote. The ultimate result is that more people, mainly non-Republicans, are afraid to go to the polls.

Maryland Democrats turned back a Republican proposal Wednesday in the Legislature.

The Republican national strategy works on the theory that poor people who don't have photo identification probably aren't going to be voting Republican anyway. Most also are minorities. So in order to keep as many non-Republicans from the polls as possible, the Republicans think they should make it as difficult - or as intimidating - as possible for them to vote.

It's a sad testament to how far politics has sunk in Maryland, and across the U.S., when political parties can no longer just put forward a platform of ideals and run open and honest campaigns based on issues.

The back-room dealings of the political parties and attempts to manipulate the process in their favor are an affront to all voters, and rather than growing beyond those low-life tactics, we are seeing more and more of it each year.

The entire fiasco about voter IDs can be traced directly to a Republican national strategy. Democrats aren't immune from similar tactics, but in this case, at least here in Maryland, they were successful in disrupting the dishonesty.

I post this as a prime example of leftist bias in the press. Here the unnamed editorialist ascribes sinister motives to Republican efforts to mitigate vote fraud. The unnamed editorialist then positions the democrats to be the saviors of the potentially dispossessed minorities. Oh well, a fact-challenged opinion piece is state-of-the art in the democrat press.

I have to present a picture ID to cash a $10 check at a bank with which I've done business for years.

Next time they ask for ID,I'll start screaming "racism, racism!"

Jim Crow laws were found unconstitutional, because they infringed on the 'Rights' of US citizens. How does a non US citizen get the 'Right' to vote? How does proving one is a citizen deny any Rights?

In Pennsylvania, the reforms vetoed by Fast Eddie included prohibitions on using the homes of committeemen (i.e. Philadelphia Democrats) as polling places.

And at the same time the press attempts to obfuscate the real motive of the dims which is to have as many illegals vote for them, unhindered, as possible!

If the dem voter could be held to only a single vote at any election, that would be all the reform needed.

You mean to tell me that non-Republicans are afraid to just show an old man or old woman (typical polling place judge) an ID? That they're that big a bunch of sissies / cowards? Do I smell just a HINT of racism here?

What always amazes me is that I can go to a gas pump just about anywhere in the country, and the gas pump knows EXACTLY who I am.

But, positive identification for the purpose of voting is just SO difficult...

At a gas pump, we're talking $10, &20, $30, $40 being stolen by a perp with a phony ID card.

At the voting booth, we're talking $$BILLIONS$$ being stolen at gunpoint by fraudulently elected "public officials" (ref. Washington State and "Fraudoire").

I know the smell of cowflop when I step in it, and the Demofraud Party is one giant cowflop...

Just goes to show most people don't think a vote is worth even $10???

I am more than tired of the voters rolls being so incomplete and inaccurate. It needs to be cleaned up, or we all should have to re-register.

In other words, poor frightened RAT minorities don't have photo IDs.

But you can bet money that they have color TV's, DVD players, iPods and cell phones.

In my book, if you can afford a cell phone, you can afford an ID.

It may not be the law, or even required, but when I vote here in central Maryland we show our driver's license to vote.

In the 2004 general election, they were collecting 5 or so at a time from those standing in line to try to speed up the checking.

Maybe it's just in those counties that had a majority for GWB that they check the ID's. Conversely, maybe it is because they check the ID's that the county could give a majority to GWB.

Do you know what? I'd make it even harder for people to vote. In addition to showing a photo ID, they'd have to be able to name the major party candidates for at least one race on the current ballot. If they couldn't, they're not well-informed enough (and it's their responsibility to inform themselves, no one else's) to cast a ballot. Turn them away.
