LONGMONT, Colo. - Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag as well as flags from other countries amid racial tensions following immigration rallies. ADVERTISEMENT
Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.
"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."
Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.
Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.
"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."
Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."
On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.
"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."
This is backfiring big time. The people I work with of every race and socioeconomic group are fed up to the max. I hope they do not forget their frustration in Nov. The way I see it, Apr 15 is only helping the persepctive on this matter.
"YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO TRAUMATISE SOME WETBACKS KID WOULD YOU?????"snorcle
I believe the legal terminology is 'assault'.
I would call my Mom a "centrist" Democrat. She's disgusted with this. This is going to bite the dims in the a@@ big time. However, the Republicans need to take advantage of it and not worry about what the ap says.
Boycott the gum't on April 15th, and see what happens. You'd go to jail, but the illegals don't have to file, anyway!
Damm straight wave that flag> They came here, we did not go there. I may sound crazy , but did anybody think maybe Al Queda could be doing this to get to Bush . There is an awful lot of money stuck in these rallies. Also don't put it past Soros and Heinzie to finance them . Seems to me they got an awful lot of money for these rallies fo poor people coming here to cut lawns.Something is fishy in the good ol USA.This gingo is going to find out!
I can understand telling a bunch of GI's in Saudi or Iraq that carrying the US flag is bad...don't do it. I can understand telling a bunch of US representatives at the Olympics...not to wave the US flag...makes us look bad. But in your state...your local town...your school? No. Just say no. Someone has a problem with the US flag within the borders of the US...just leave....go elsewhere. This is real simple. Tell the school...the represenatives...the local paper...whoever...that you just ain't going to play that game. They may leave if the US flag makes them feel that way.
If you burned the flag, however.......now that would be an act of courage.......
welcome to Soviet America!
BUMP!
My liberal relatives are also disgusted with this. Illegal immigration is all the talk in our family this past week. What really has gotten my liberal relatives angry is the mexican flax waving all over the place.
COMING TO YOUR CITY...SOON.
Wrong. They are using it as precisely guided patriotism.
Yeah. Things have gotten a bit wacky. If the GOP sits back and takes this crap they are gonna suffer in November.
Vote Libertarian!
I understand banning foreign flags; but, why ban the U.S. flag???
