DURHAM, N.C. - The father of the woman who has accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said he didn't find out that his daughter was the reported victim - and that she is an exotic dancer - until a reporter visited his house.
The retired trucker who lives in Durham said he saw his daughter the day after the reported attack, but she didn't say anything was wrong. She even left her car at the house for several days because he said she didn't want to drive it.
Her father, a quiet man who tinkers on cars as a hobby, said he saw news reports about the attack.
"I didn't know it was my daughter," he said. The Charlotte Observer generally does not name victims of sexual assault, so his name is being withheld to protect the identity of his daughter.
The case has ignited campus protests and stirred racial tension in Durham. The woman at the center of the case is black, and the men she accuses are white. She also is a student at N.C. Central University, a historically black college near Durham's inner-city, compared with the more expensive Duke campus.
DNA tests have been conducted on 46 of the lacrosse players, who deny the allegations. A 47th member, who is black, was not tested because the woman said her attackers were white.
Last week, a reporter stopped by the reported victim's house looking for her, the woman's father said, but he said he didn't know what was going on. He called his daughter and she said the district attorney told her not talk to anyone.
"(She) didn't tell us anything about it," he said.
He said he also found out through the media that his daughter, who is the youngest of three, was an exotic dancer.
"She always told me she was going to work," he said.
On Friday, he installed a timing belt in a car and watched his daughter's two children play outside the house. He said working on cars and playing with the grandchildren helps take his mind off what's happening with his daughter.
He said she seems to be doing "pretty good," and so is the rest of the family. He said they haven't talked much about the reported incident, but it weighs heavily on his mind. He said he's grateful that N.C. Central has been so supportive, but he doesn't like how his daughter has been portrayed in the media. And he's especially frustrated that no one has been charged in the connection with the allegations.
"If it had been anybody but them, they would have been locked up, but yet they didn't because it's Duke," he said. "I hope them boys - if they did it - I hope they get what they deserve. I hope they don't go lenient on them."
District Attorney Michael Nifong said he's waiting for results of the DNA test and that he does not expect to file charges in the case any earlier than next week.
The reason they are out there is that those stories are based on yesterday's news; you must know how that works.
I'm talking to you about things that the lawyers said on live TV since 5 o'clock this afternoon.
I don't have links to TV shows.
And yes, the DA does bother me; this case is ALWAYS handled by assistant DA's in Durham County and he decides to handle it himself and today says he'll call a press conference in two weeks to announce what he will do, which just happens to be two weeks before the primary.
From the very first press conference he held there has been absolutely NO doubt he thinks they are guilty; he's POSITIVE a crime happened there, he says, even thought they are STILL investigating.
He said repeatedly that the DNA would PROVE that they did it; but now that the players have attorneys, he's saying that even if the DNA doesn't link any of them up, they could have used condoms or, the newest theory, that three other guys not on the soccer team could have showed up and raped her in that house.
That's utter BULL$HIT.
LOL.
What the heck?????????????
The one thing that I find really unsettling about this case is the, oddly convenient, 911 call. Who would call 911 to say that some people are yelling nasty things at them?
Since many rape cases boil down to he said/ she said, I'm wondering if someone got a little too cute here in order to provide extra evidence.
LOL--I know--Lax teams don't have towel boys...but you got my drift!
Oh my ... now that part of the story really doesn't add up
Not one word of that was proven in a court of law; and if you want to speculate, we can talk about the evidence the defense had about exactly WHY she appeared to have had rough sex, but that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that the rape report showed nothing that would have convicted Kobe Bryant, or he would have been on trial, because he, too, fell under the thumb of a DA running for reelection.
And let's not forget that his accuser had had sex with three different men within about 3 days.
I KNEW I had read that somewhere but I couldn't find it!
Thanks so much for finding it.
According to the accuser's account, she chose to report the incident after her father saw her in the hospital after the rape. According to the father, he saw her the next day and she appeared normal (remember, according to her they beat her up and tried to strangle her) and did not mention that anything had happened to her.
He said it on Channel 17 tonight.
that explains it--they're after the wrong team!!!
Hold on, look what I jsut found:
NBC 17 is not revealing the man's name in order to protect the identity of his daughter, who said members of the Duke men's lacrosse team raped, sodomized and strangled her on March 13. The man described what his daughter looked like when she was released from a hospital.
"Her face was all swollen up, her jaw. She couldn't half walk. One of her legs was hurt," he said.

Is it just me, or are they all over the place?
Now the possibility does occur to me that maybe she has a father and a stepfather, and the "father" she is referring to is not the same person as the father in this above story. But even if that is the case: 1) such a fact should be clarified right away and 2) that means that she was seen by family soon after the incident and appeared fine and said nothing.
I hope you are right. I fear you are not. Most of your points are about the DA's words and actions but both could well be true....the DA is a putz and a crime was committed. He's more likely to take a slam dunk if he's being driven by politics. On the other hand, he could also be motivated by the public furor and attempting to hang innocent boys....
Sorry---I got the contradiction the first time..This DA better have some evidence of something..ESPN is massacring these kids
Well, we don't know what time she left. She could have been gone by 12:30; she sure wasn't there at 12:53 when they made the call about the racial slurs.
No .. they are completely different stories
Better yet, who would call 911 for that and say "We drove by, we walked by, we drove by, I'm parked in front of the house right now?" (Saying 610 N. Buchanan when there are NO street numbers on the house).
If somebody made racial slurs against you, would you park in front of their house?
Shall we thank the poster upthread who searched all over hell and gone to find the roster to post?
If this kid were my son, I'd have him lawyered up too. There is enough talk about "the whole team" that I'd want my kid protected.
