Canteen Music Dedication

Star Spangled Banner
Click for our National Anthem!
(remove your caps please!)

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'T is the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

*I Hear America Singing!*
*Walt Whitman and America*
Click on the hyperlinks for the selection! Please support all the artists you hear in the Canteen!! Keep the music going!

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it would be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on
the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,

The woodcutter's song, the ploughboy's on his way in the morning, or at noon
intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the
girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day --- at night the party of young fellows,
robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

-- Walt Whitman

Warning: This section contains music that stirs feelings of patriotism for some or highlights just how damn awesome we are to begin with. It also happens to mention God, love of country, love of our military, and just love of America overall. This section also happens to be displayed *gasp* at time when it isn't *Memorial Day*, *4th Of July*, or *Veterans Day* holidays. The nerve, huh? So? If you are appalled, annoyed, and aggravated at our breaking of tradition, GET OVER IT!

In all honesty, sometimes when you're down, this is great music to make you feel better!!

My Country Tis Of Thee (America) Lyrics

Background Info: (written by Samuel Francis Smith; the tune used for this song is "God Save the Queen", the British National Anthem)

The Caissons Go Rolling Along Background Info
The Caissons Go Rolling Along

Over hill, over dale
As we hit the dusty trail,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
In and out, hear them shout,
Counter march and right about,
And those Caissons go rolling along.
Then it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where e'er you go,
You will always know
That those Caissons go rolling along.

(Thanks to HiJinx for decoding the second verse)

1. Through the storms, through the night
2. (I don't know..I hear 'oversight' at the end) <--Anyone want to venture a guess?
3. While the caissons go rolling along
4. When it's zero we'll be there
5. Ans'ring every bomb and flare
6. While the caissons go rolling along

Over hill, over dale
As we hit the dusty trail,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
In and out, hear them shout,
Counter march and right about,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
Then it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where e'er you go,
You will always know
That those Caissons go rolling along.
That those Caissons go rolling along.
That those Caissons go rolling along.

Hail To The Chief Lyrics

If you are like hotstreak (and MoJo hopes you aren't), you were probably surprised at some point to learn there are actual lyrics to this song. Now you can sing a long!

Yankee Doodle Boy Lyrics below
Verse
I'm the kid that's all the candy,
I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy,
I'm glad I am,
(So's Uncle Sam.)
I'm a real live Yankee Doodle,
Made my name and fame and boodle,
Just like Mister Doodle did, by riding on a pony.
I love to listen to the Dixie strain,
"I long to see the girl I left behind me;"
And that ain't a josh,
She's a Yankee, by gosh.
(Oh, say can you see,
Anything about a Yankee that's a phony?)

Chorus
I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy,
A Yankee Doodle, do or die;
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's,
Born on the Fourth of July.
I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart,
She's my Yankee Doodle joy.
Yankee Doodle came to London,
Just to ride the ponies;
I am the Yankee Doodle Boy.

*Interesting tidbits: For whatever reason, we never sing the 2nd verse of this song! This song also gets confused with *Yankee Doodle* a lot. These are two seperate songs.

Stars and Stripes Forever lyrics written by Charles Burr

John Philip Sousa came back to earth one day!
He looked around at what he found here all the contradictions that abound here
Good surviving, evil thriving, everything in disarray ...
With frown and mouth turned upside down
He said "This'll never do! dead level never do!
Don't they know to show some pride in who they are!
The pioneers of former years were not without their doubts and woes and fears but
They know well the love of God would never let them go astray!
But here today where there's no fear of dark in the wilderness some are in wilderness
They must shift and lift their gaze to some new star!
By a star in the east the least of men once were succored in time of needing
For the star promised peace to those in pain and from Galilee was Westwardly proceeding.
With the star of the West the best of men now are siding in their endeavor
To restore as of yore their country's pride in the glory of the stars and stripes forever.
Three cheers for the red, white and blue, for the red is the blood of our brothers.
The white is the light of the star that has led us to where we are.
The blue is the hue of the sky where on high the Almighty falters never.
Our banner for two hundred years! Oh pioneers! Here's to the stars and stripes forever!

For John Philip Sousa's lyrics, click here. Which is another example of lyrics that never get used anymore for whatever reason.

This is the Army, Mister Jones
This is the Army, Mister Jones (Ver. 2)
lyrics written by Irving Berlin

This is the Army, Mister Jones
No private rooms or telephones
You had your breakfast in bed before
But you won't have it there any more

This is the Army, Mister Green
We like the barracks nice and clean
You had a housemaid to clean your floor
But she won't help you out any more

Do what the buglers command
They're in the Army and not in a band

This is the Army, Mister Brown
You and your baby went to town
She had you worried but this is war
And she won't worry you anymore

A bunch of frightened rookies were list'ning filled with awe
They listened while a sergeant was laying down the law
They stood there at attention, their faces turning red
The sergeant looked them over and this is what he said:

When Johnny Comes Marching Home There are varying lyrics for this song!
WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME
(Mitch Miller)

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Oh, the men will cheer the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out,
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Well, the laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his loyal brow,
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-one
Hurrah! Hurrah!
That was when the war begun,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-two,
Both sides were falling to,
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Old Abe, he ended slavery
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-three
Old Abe, he ended slavery
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-four,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Abe called for five hundred thousand more,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-five,
They talked rebellion--strife;
And we'll all drink stone wine
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine
When Johnny comes marching home.

God Bless America Lyrics below

God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains To the prairies,
To the ocean white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Greetings all and one tien for the Friday Night Flyby. Tonight we have the Consolidated B-24 Liberator for your viewing pleasure. As your humble poster did last week this wqill be a two part post. Original color pics from WW-II tonight with some restored B-24 color pics for the Saturday Sortie. On with the pics.

Judging from the large US flags painted on this early B-24 I am guessing that this pic was taken before 1942.

A formation of B-24s at a training unit.

A trio of Mighty Eigth Airforce B-24s over England I believe.

Another formation of Liberators.

A US Navy PB4Y on patrol.

A good example of good ol American ingenuity. The crew of this B-24 used thier parachutes as drag chutes when they discovered that the brakes were out on thier B-24.

Tomorrow night more Libs. Y'all have a great night.

Regards
