So they have abandoned the end of the first season where they had a direction to start looking for earth.

Seems like they have ripped off Robotech big time between the settlement (macross city) and the half breed baby (dana) and the human alien love (human/zentrati)

They haven't abandoned the story line at all. In the original series, Baltar was a former president of the colonies who had betrayed them. As I see it, the finale is following that concept.

I don't look for "New Caprica" to last more than a half dozen episodes. The colonists will be rescued, or will escape the Cylons once again to rejoin their quest for Earth.

I should have read the entire blog entry before posting to you. It does appear that the New Caprica thread will be there for quite some time. But they are going to eventually get off that planet and resume their search for Earth. Just a bump in the road that will open up opportunities for great storytelling.
