TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran successfully test-fired a missile that can avoid radar and hit several targets simultaneously using multiple warheads, the military said Friday.
Gen. Hossein Salami, the air force chief of the elite Revolutionary Guards, did not specify the missile's range, saying it depends on the weight of its warheads. But state-run television described the weapon as "ballistic," suggesting it's of comparable range to Iran's existing ballistic rocket, which can travel 2,000 kilometres and reach arch-foe Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East.
"Today, a remarkable goal of the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence forces was realized with the successful test-firing of a new missile with greater technical and tactical capabilities than those previously produced," Salami said on state-run television.
It showed a clip of the launch of what it called the Fajr-3, with "fajr" meaning "victory" in Farsi.
"It can avoid anti-missile missiles and strike the target," Salami said. He said the missile would carry a multiple warhead, and each warhead would be capable of hitting its target precisely.
"This news causes much concern, and that concern is shared by many countries in the international community, about Iran's aggressive nuclear weapons program and her parallel efforts to develop delivery systems, both in the field of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev.

Tuned in Fox last night, Brit Hume's show. The Allstars were in agreement that it'd be tough for GW to bomb Iran's nukes without getting permission from congress...because of the uproar over bad intelligence and missing WMD's in Iraq...we all know the WMD's were sent to Syria, but dems don't want to talk about that. They'd prefer to impeach GW. So, the consensus is that GW will let Israel do the bombing. Since we control Iraqi airspace, they can fly over Jordan and Iraq, no problem. We'll still take heat from the rest of the world, but not as much as if we bombed Iran, ourselves.
But the muslim leading the IAEA says there is no proof Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons. He said sanctions would prevent his group from further investigations into these allegations.
I am very glad that El-Baradei decided to call for toning down the speech to Iran. It's obvious there is no need for any strong language or anything....
Well, I think it's safe to assume we know a lot more about the Iranian test than they think we do. We knew about it when it happened, and probably before. Thus we probably had a variety of assets in place to monitor and assess the performance of the missile.
I rather suspect that it's not nearly so "radar transparent" as claimed -- though perhaps they think it is; in which case, it's good to let them think they're invisible when they're really not.
Finally, this was just a test. The mullahs may well declare success ... but I'll bet it wasn't as successful as they claimed. It's media spin.
I saw it, too. I don't think it could be done from the air alone, even with the new 'bunker-busters'(trust me, I know ;-), but they could play a big part in any coordinated ground/air strike.
It wouldn't take much for a right turn from Iraq of a battalion or two to go in on the ground. As far a Congress goes, are you familiar with the term 'Clear and Present Danger?' :-)
If they really do have MIRV technology, we can trace it directly to the activities of one man.
Good point! I'm certain Allah disapproves of the 13th century mindset and actions of the Iranians and their cohorts.
China and Russia benefit.
It is in the interest of China and Russia to see the USA get bogged down in Iraq. This is why they allowed the US to invade Iraq--they knew the USA would end up spending a $ Trillion dollars after all is said and done (we are half-way there already).
For every dollar we spend globe trotting the world and fighting in regional conflicts, China and Russia close the gap on us militarily. They spend their $$$ on R&D and producing advanced weapons, while we waste our military $$$ on repair and maintenance and replacement of old weapon systems.
N. Korea developed their missiles from China's help and from Russia's help. China has developed most of its military arms from Russia's help. Pakistan and N. Korea traded military know-how. All these nations have the same goal--weakening the USA empowers them. They are all a team. They all have a common goal--a weak America.
Re Iran, China and Russia know that a nuclear Iran and an Iran with capable missiles will cause the USA to get bogged down in missile defense and other major expenditures for Saudia Arabia and Israel. Again, more money taken away from the USA's defense and more closing of the gap while China and Russia spend their money on new advanced programs.
China and Russia don't want us to attack Iran now and will do everything including threaten us to prevent that. However, once Iran gains more military capability, and maybe a nuke, then China and Russia would LOVE to see us attack Iran (once Iran pays them their debts), so the USA would get bogged down in another conventional war and chew up another $1 Trillion.
China and Russia know what they are doing. Russia plays us like a fine Stradivarius. China and Russia work together because they know that they both gain whenever the USA's national treasury gets dumped in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, etc.
China and Russia use the USA's "go-gooder, globe-trotting police action and defender of democracy" agenda to weaken the USA and to close the gap and eventually supercede the USA in advanced weapon capability.
Ping

True it is. We need conservative leadership in the White House and the Congress to stop doing the stupid stuff (like supporting illegals and funding every world conflict). Too bad we don't have a President and Congress that is FOCUSED on the U.S. instead of every country outside our borders...that would help the issue greatly.
I call BS, Iran does not have MIRV tech. Thats like 25 years ahead of their time.
Iran celebrating April fools or something?
"...elite Revolutionary Guards..."
Oxymoron? Only the MSM would describe a bunch of Islamic thugs as "elite."
Don't know. I picked this week in the pool. If the predictions are right, Iran will test a nuke a week from tomorrow.
The UN seems to do a pretty good job of holding US back.
Two can play at that game. Loading ordinance..chest candy coming soon for everyone involved..
