Mexican flag burned after week of protests

Tensions over immigration got a little heated Thursday in Apache Junction.

A Mexican flag was brought to school by a Hispanic student in response to what he said was a racist remark directed at him the day before. After he and other students raised the flag on the school's flagpole, the newspaper said another group of students took it down and burned it.

The burning and ensuing shoving match between the two groups of students happened before most students arrived at the school.

The school's principal said all six students involved will be disciplined.

Security was beefed up after the incident but there were no other problems at the school Thursday.

I have a feeling this won't be the last incident. This pot's set to boil.

To be honest, I hope it does. That is the only way that things get done in this country. When Americans get angry, good things happen.

My great-grandparents came here legaly, from Germany. But they were Americans.

Amen. So were my great-grandparents. I once asked my father why no one spoke German and he told me he had asked his father the same question.

The answer he received (and I received) was: "We live in America, here you speak English". My grandparents spoke English with not even a hint of an accent.

I just spoke with a rather frazzled lady at the school, and I heard many many phones ringing in the background.

She reassured me that the American flag is flying. I repeated it a couple of times, "So, The AMERICAN FLAG is flying as we speak?". Yes, ma'am, it is.

She DID garble something about not wanting to offend the Mexican students...to which I asked her again, was the American Flag still flying proudly?

Poor thing. Get over it already. This is the United States of America not Mexico. My ancestors were here legally in the 1600's in most cases and in the 1700's in the others. I also have Indian blood which I am very proud of. If they want to live here, get here legally or be sent back where they came from. I am really tired of going to businesses where they do not speak any English. That does not happen that much here but we just got back from CA and I was really, really fed up with trying to talk to someone who seems not to understand a word of this country's language.

It's the United States of America. We fly the Stars and Stripes here. IF they want to FLY THE DAMNED MEXICAN FLAG, LET THEM GO BACK TO MEXICO AND HOIST IT UP SOME POLE DOWN THERE.
