Mexican flag burned after week of protests

Associated Press Mar. 31, 2006 07:10 AM

Tensions over immigration got a little heated Thursday in Apache Junction.

A Mexican flag was brought to school by a Hispanic student in response to what he said was a racist remark directed at him the day before. After he and other students raised the flag on the school's flagpole, the newspaper said another group of students took it down and burned it.

The burning and ensuing shoving match between the two groups of students happened before most students arrived at the school.

The school's principal said all six students involved will be disciplined.

Security was beefed up after the incident but there were no other problems at the school Thursday.

I agree with you. I don't defend the actions of the students who put up the flag (or the ones who burned it). I'm really just speaking out of my frustration with the anti-Mexican sentiments I see on this board.

It's refreshing too see somebody else's flag burned for a change!

There were approximately 3 million people of various warring factions of Indian tribes in all of North America at the time of the American revolution. Most were nomadic and none claimed any ownership of any land. So to give you a visual, take the population of Chicago, just the city not the whole metro area and spread that population out around all of North America from Mexico to the Arctic. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. America was by and large a uninhabited wilderness.

Now are there consequences? Yes. I assume both groups of these students will be punished according to the laws they violated, and they should be. I DO think they did the right thing in burning the flag, but I also believe in obeying the law. Sometimes you will pay penalties under the law for doing the right thing, and they should be willing to face those consequences.

But I won't condemn them personally, I'd thank them.

Soul Seeker said what I was trying to much better than I could. The flag burners should be lightly punished. The ones that put their property where it had no business being should be on the outside looking in.

While I'm handing out punishment here, let's bring up school officials and where ... were they while this was going on? A stop should have been put to the whole business when the Stars and Stripes started down the pole the first time.

This happened in Arizona. Arizona used to be part of Mexico, as was most of the American West. If I were Mexican, it would make my blood boil to see an American flag flying over the land of my ancestors. I know this view is VERY unpopular on this board, and I expect to be flamed, but I'm tired of the anti-Mexican rants I read on this forum every day.

Virtually the entire western hemisphere, from the northernmost part of Alaska down to the tip of South America was conquered through force by Europeans, and mostly Spanish Europeans once you get below a certain latitude. How far back would you like to go with these historical grudges? I'm sure the descendants of the Iriquois would probably love to have New York State back as well.

I think reasonable people can agree that taking land through military conquest is wrong, but let's be honest, unless you're actually prepared to leave yourself, isn't it rather silly to go down this rhetorical road?

I'm really just speaking out of my frustration with the anti-Mexican sentiments I see on this board.

If these were Canadians or English or Irish who took down the American Flag and replaced it with theirs, my reaction would be exactly the same. That is an act of war. The flag flies over our country as a symbol of our sovereignty and taking it down and replacing it with the flag of a foreign country is a violation of our sovereignty. Any violation of American Sovereignty is an act of war. It always has been and it always will be.

If your blood does not boil at the thought of foreign insurgents (yes they are insurgents) taking down an American Flag on American soil and replacing it with the flag of a foreign nation, then I would have to question your loyalty to that flag and all that it represents.

I think we need to give medals of freedom to the kids who recognized this fact and took down the Mexican flag and burned it. Those kids are patriots. Those kids tell me that there is hope for our future.

Legal immigration made this country puissant. Illegal immigration is making this country prostrate.

That's my thing.

I'd like it to go like this.

As the kids stand before the judge he says, "youre guilty...now go home."

How do you know that these were teenagers? Are you writing in from Apache Junction? I will assume that Apache Junction is in AZ, as it was from one of their papers.

Other than that one name, what information in this BS article makes you compare six kids in a "ape the adults" moment to those to hideous monsters at Columbine? Could you please point out ANY information at all in this article, other than that BS headline?

Who wrote this article and why that headline? Weeks of protest? At what school? Total BS.

Amazing...another one that reads but unable to comprehend....WTH do you need...pictures!

This week’s tensions over immigration reform literally caught fire in the East Valley on Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it.

The flag burners should be lightly punished.

Give me one good reason why these patriots should be punished at all? They took down a flag that had been used to assert foreign dominance over our Sovereign Nation and gave it the treatment it deserved.

Show me what law they violated.

That flag violated the sovereignty of the United States of America. That flag had to be burned. The kids should not only not be punished, they should be rewarded. If I were President, they would be invited to the White House and given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Well, then lets start with YOU. I propose the former people that "roamed" your area of country take your current home and/or property and you go find an NON_Occupied piece of land somewhere else in the world.

If you run up a foreign flag on an American Flag pole as an act of defiance of American Sovereignty, then you have lost all property rights in that flag. You have also lost any right you have to stand on American Soil. The insurgents should have to pony up for the matches before they are deported. Actually they should spend a few years at Levinworth or Guantanamo before they are deported.
