Mexican flag burned after week of protests

Associated Press Mar. 31, 2006 07:10 AM

Tensions over immigration got a little heated Thursday in Apache Junction.

A Mexican flag was brought to school by a Hispanic student in response to what he said was a racist remark directed at him the day before. After he and other students raised the flag on the school's flagpole, the newspaper said another group of students took it down and burned it.

The burning and ensuing shoving match between the two groups of students happened before most students arrived at the school.

The school's principal said all six students involved will be disciplined.

Security was beefed up after the incident but there were no other problems at the school Thursday.

...but I'm tired of the anti-Mexican rants I read on this forum every day.

Hmmm. I don't see any of that, but I do see a lot of anger about illegal immigrants. Oh, and quite a few like you who try to obfuscate like you have done here.

Really? it would make me more furious to look south and see my present day "people" living in absolute squalor and poverty in a corrupt, cess pool of a country.

If I were Mexican, it would make my blood boil to see an American flag flying over the land of my ancestors.

That happened 160 years ago. All of the "Mexicans" who lived in America at that time (other then the Mexican Army and Mexican government officials) kept their land and their posessions and became Americans. Anyone who didn't want to be part of America at that time was free to leave.

This is not the land of the ancestors of those who raised that flag. The number of Mexicans actually living in Arizona at the time of the Mexican American war were miniscule. And I suspect that the descendants of those who were living here in 1840 are all extremely loyal Americans.

Learn your history.

You need a history lesson bub. Seriously. The western land was earned in blood and money. Treaties were signed to acknowledge as much.

Some idiot was talking about boycotting Taco Bell.

Furthermore, there's no mention that these kids were illegals or the children of illegals. But people are quick to make that assumption.

The problem here is those attempting cause riots here agree with you, their solution is to take back those lands you say once belonged to them.

The fact of the matter is that after the Mexican American war we were nice enough to let the Mexicans keep Mexico. We could have annexed the whole country and solved this problem 150 years ago.

I don't know what all happened at that school, and I'm not defending what any of those kids did. I just find it interesting that many people (like perhaps the white kids at that school) say things like "Go back to your country" to Mexicans without considering that maybe they've been here longer than them. Granted, that's often not the case, and I certainly don't support giving back the land or anything crazy like that.

Oh, and hey "student," today is Auditory Test day, and teacher Miss Behave has one more question for you: See my middle finger pointing down? Can you hear it, or should I turn it up?

USED to be part of Mexico. It is not anymore, therefore they have no business flying that flag on US gov't property. Deal with it.

Kind like the Eastern land was "earned" from the Indians?

I'm not an advocate of reparations or anything, but I think it's insane to try and deny injustices and racism that plague the history of this great country. I think the U.S.A. is the greatest nation in the world, but that doesn't mean we didn't make a few mistakes along the way.

Legal or illegal, that flag has no business replacing an American one in our country on state land. Why can't you grasp that?

It's always difficult for Republicans/Conservatives to demonstrate.

I don't think it's in our nature to whine in public...and we have jobs.
