Mexican flag burned at Apache Junction HS

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me."

He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated.

Freshman Chelsea Garcia, 15, and junior Brittany Ramage, 16, said the unrest had more to do with long-running racial tensions at the school.

The week's events might have sparked some anger, Ramage said, "but kids aren't too deep about that stuff."

The Hispanic student who brought the Mexican flag said he was responding to a remark directed at him Wednesday. The flag-raising, flag-burning, and shoving match that followed happened before most students arrived at school.

Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said.

Officials with the Apache Junction Unified School District would not specify what punishment the six face.

Wilson did say in a letter sent home to parents that there would be "increased supervision, including additional police officers, on the campus over the next couple of days."

School flagpoles have been lightning rods across the country this week, including an incident in which a Houston high-school principal was disciplined after he flew a Mexican flag underneath his campus' U.S. and state flags.

A new political awareness among students has also been grabbing attention, as thousands have walked out on classes to join rallies in Phoenix and elsewhere. More than 100 students from Mesa's Carson Junior High and Westwood High schools marched in protest on Mesa streets Tuesday.

"It beyond reasoning. People applauding the destruction of radio towers aka private property."

When that 'private property' is being used by agents of a foreign government to incite sedition, it ceases to be private property and becomes an instrument of tyranny against We the People of the United States of America.

Good afternoon

FNC just showed a growing protest in San Diego, with many Mexican flags flying.

The rain must have let up.

"And then some other stupid children pulled it down and burned it. They did not know the significance of their actions."

The 'child' as you call him knew EXACTLY the significance of a foreign flag being raised above Old Glory. He's more of a 'man' than most of our US Senators and not nearly as stupid as those in DC willing to allow an invasion upon our soil and open insurrection. His actions were necessitated by the stupidity and inaction of some so-called 'adults' willing to sacrifice their nation upon the altar of apathy and inaction.

Agreed. I would have take the Mexican flag down also. Don't know if I would have burned it, but it would have ended up in the trash.

"To my wife its a symbol of ethnic pride and thats it."

When 'ethnic pride' supercedes national pride, there's a problem. That 'hyphen' mentality will be the downfall of this country.

The only American flag I have seen photos of being burned at one of these demos was by some Communists a few years back who didn't look Mexican!

Then you are not paying attention. Almost every one of these pro-illegal alien protests includes a US flag burning.

Did you read the posts on the link about this? One said the white students should be more tolerant of the others who are coming to the school. She said she had a 16 year old student there. She blamed the ROTC students instead of the ones who started it.

Another poster said she was wrong with that opinion.

If you have not read them, then do.

"We are not at war with Mexico."

Speak for yourself. Why do you think former agents of the Mexican government have been at the forefront of organizing these so-called 'demonstrations'.

Terrorists burn American flags in our country. Insurrectionists hoist foreign flags above the flag of the nation that they inhabit.

Patriots burn foreign flags that have been hoisted above the Stars and Stripes on our sovereign soil. If apathy and inaction are more sacred in our society than preserving our nation and freedom, we're already lost. These unwelcome 'guests' and our US Senate are bent on usurping our constitutional right to preserve and enforce our sovereignty and the integrity of our borders.

According to a poster on the link to this article, there was already trouble between the whites and Mexican students. I am proud of the young men who burned that flag.

Baloney. There needs to be more actions like this one. Why should a foreign flag ever be allowed to take the place of the American one?

The Mexican flag was left on a school flag pole. That was a very stupid act and they got what they deserved by the flag being burned.

"There was also vandalism to a hispanic radio tower which will keep them off the air for weeks."

Sounds like a modern Boston Tea Party... People seem to forget that our nation was not founded by apathetic milquetoasts.

Raising the Mexican flag above the school in the US is a very provocative act, but so is burning the Mexican flag in response.

Hasn't flag burning been upheld as legitimate "speech" by the supreme court? If so, these kids were well within their rights to burn the Mexican flag in protest.

"Because if you are, you are no patriot."

When the government runs afoul of the will of We the People, refuses to provide for a common defense, and blatantly attempts to usurp our right to defend ourselves from foriegn invasion, it has violated the social contract and surrendered the privilege it is granted BY us to rule us in this matter.

Our rights are inalienable, and when someone cowers behind them in an attempt to take them away, they are tyrants AND cowards.

As long as they don't BURN American flags,Let them wave the Mexican flag to their heart's content.
This tactic will actually BACKFIRE on their cause in the long run.

Can you be specific?I did see US flags being burned IN Mexican territory.
Where and when during this latest round of protests were American flags burned?

"There are limitless legal ways to turn this tide."

And even more limitless legal ways for our constitutional right to sovereignty to be usurped. We are fighting an enemy that openly spits upon our laws. If you think lawyers are the best defense against invasion, you're sadly mistaken.

Funny you should say that....
