Why should the administration correct something that the President didn't say?

Because the American people and his base believe that he did. If he was misunderstood then why not say so when directly asked. All the administration would have to say is "no, the president was not referring to the minutemen".

Why go to all that trouble just to avoid answering a question?

My take is that the President mistook the question, and the MSM spun the answer. If he were directly asked specifically about the Minutemen now I'd bet his answer would be different.
