CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Sailors from Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron (HS) 10 “Warhawks,” deployed to the Pacific in support of the global war on terrorism March 24.

The detachment of 31 Sailors and two HH-60H Seahawks departed Naval Air Station North Island aboard an Air Force C-5 Galaxy cargo jet.

“This is our opportunity to go out and do what we’ve been training for, and also help the other branches of the military,” said Lt. Matt Burns, HH-60H pilot and detachment administration officer.

HS-10 had a lot of maintenance work to complete over the past two weeks to prepare for the deployment.

“We pulled together and got the job done so we can get them out on the C-5,” said Chief Aviation Warfare Systems Operator (AW/SW) Jason Barney.

HS-10 is comprised of more than 300 Sailors; the 31 Sailors in the detachment are specially qualified to perform multiple jobs during this deployment.

“The camaraderie in the squadron is awesome; everyone steps up and does what’s needed to complete the mission,” said Aviation Electricians Mate 1st Class (AW) Froilan Laguardia.

The HS-10 detachment is designed to rapidly deploy to any location and conduct anti-submarine warfare, naval special warfare and search and rescue missions. The detachment is also qualified to land on any of the Navy’s ships.

Drop and dip sonar buoys. Then there are specialized torpedoes that the choppers carry and drop in the water when they have a contact. They are also usually backed up by surface ships that are also listening to the sonar pings and acoustic sounds that can toss more stuff to where the enemy pig-boat is.

Drop Sonar Buoys in the water or cable tethered sonar dome and drop a Mark 48 torpedo and watch it go to work. I have a feeling something is up other than the "War on Terror". Time will tell.

Only Iran has a size-able submarine force that the U.S. navy has to worry about although they have a lot of anti-ship mines that those Helos can also deal with.

Well, they stop and fold upward those great big flapping blades and then hurl into the water not unlike a big cannonballer. This usually convinces the sub's crew to surface.
