JILL CARROLL RELEASED UNHARMED (Update: Jill praises mujahedeen in new video statement!)
SBS New ^ | 3/31/06 | SBS News

American reporter Jill Carroll has been released after a three-month hostage ordeal in Iraq and was with US officials inside Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

-snip-

Video interview

A video posted on the internet, which could not be independently verified, showed Ms Carroll in an interview apparently conducted by her captors before they released her.

"Did you think the American army or the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) would save you at any time," a muffled male voice asked Ms Carroll in accented English.

"Sometimes I thought maybe that they might come, they might find me, they might find a way to know where I am and come get me," she answered.

"Why did not they save you?" asked the interviewer.

"I think the mujahedeen are very smart and even with all the technology and all the people that the American army has here, they still are better at knowing how to live and work here, more clever," she said

"Does this mean something to you?" the man questioning her asked.

"It makes very clear that the mujahedeen are the ones that will win in the end," Ms Carroll said in the video.

At the end of the eight and a half minute tape, the same man read out a statement in Arabic.

"The mujahedeen in the land of the two rivers announce the liberation of the journalist Jill Carroll... after the US forces and the CIA failed to find her making their ineptitude obvious to the whole world," he said.

"We liberate this journalist today after the American government met some of our demands by releasing some of our women prisoners."

She's already "out of danger."

She didn't seem very fearful to me. However, it struck me that she might have staged this thing, because she seemed to be enjoying the lime-light just a bit too much.

Perhaps she is sincere and just wants to help, and was just a little too unhinged for this country anyway. I was thinking that America exports a lot of energetic, confident people all over the world.

Too bad she is supporting terrorists. I have no doubt that they would have slaughtered her without hesitation is circumstances had changed only slightly, just as they did that Red Crescent woman during the war.

I heard her on TV today saying that she was treated very well, could take showers, "had plenty of food", and her room had a window in it....nothing about being held captive for how long? or what her family had been through w/her being captured. or about her interpreter being killed by these oh-so-caring captors. Why continue wearing that outfit now that she has been released?

"It makes very clear that the mujahideen are the ones that will win in the end," said Ms Carroll...

If I said what I feel, I'd get banned.

Someone else pointed out that her outfit looked like it was made of silk. Pretty ritzy for a hostage, eh?

I've heard she speaks the language, had been in Iraq for quite some time before she was "abducted". She wasn't the new-commer to Iraq some journalists protrayed her. Also if my memory is still working, she was not a member of the Christian Science Monitor when she went to Iraq, but a Free Lance Reporter. I don't believe she is the innocent, uninformed she is portrayed to be.

I guess everyone is entitled to speculate.

I'm not sure precisely what you're suggesting. And I'm not sure about the evidence for such a serious charge. The basic idea seems implausible to me.

Why is she looking so distressed in that picture if she was treated so well? Is she acting?

My specific accusation is that she is just like the three phony Japanese hostages, and the phony Italian journalist/hostage.

"I think that as a captive of terrorists, she's entitled to do what she feels necessary to get and keep rapport with the kidnappers. People shouldn't condemn her if their lives haven't been at risk in a similar fashion."

Iraqi groups seek journalist's release By Firas Al-Atraqchi

Thursday 19 January 2006, 4:56 Makka Time, 1:56 GMT

Carroll wrote for the Christian Science Monitor from Iraq

A day after Aljazeera aired video of kidnapped journalist Jill Carroll, several prominent Iraqi groups have demanded her immediate and unconditional release.

Muthana Harith al-Dhari, head of the influential Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS), condemned and denounced all violent acts that expose innocent citizens – regardless of their identities – to danger.

Al-Dhari told Iraqi television: "Regarding the recent kidnapping of the American journalist [Jill Carroll] ... This journalist is one of the anti-occupation journalists. Indeed, she wrote many articles that explain the negative signs of the occupation. Also, in a recent story, she focused on the violations performed by government security forces against civilians.

...she got released cause the brainwashing is done. I can't help but wonder. I have heard that she went to Iraq symapthetic to the 'terorist' cause. I have no evidence, but I would not be surpirsed if she 'went native' and collaborated as a willing captive in the propaganda battle to get the women prisoners freed.

Thanks for the information. I understand Jill Carroll was hostile the U.S. liberation of Iraq. And it makes sense for the people seeking her freedom to emphasize that fact.

Even though she's a left-winger, she's also a United States citizen. She was doing a job. I don't like her politics, but I'm still happy she's alive. And I don't see any basis for the more lurid conspiracy theories here.

When defense contractors were killed in Iraq in 2004, I was stunned at the hostility of left-wing blogs. Their reaction to the murders hardly seemed human. I don't like seeing us show anything like the same hostility to someone merely for being on the left -- we can do better.

I just think that we need to wait until she is completely out of danger before we can judge her statements.

According to CBS Evening News, she is in the green zone and declining safe transport by the U.S. military. It looks to me that she has been an apologist for her captors ~after~ she was safe. Certainly, anything she says in the green zone is something she can be held accountable for.
