Immigration Issue Remains Divisive

March 30, 2006--As Congress considers legislation to reform the immigration process, the nation remains divided on how to proceed.

By a 65% to 25% margin, Americans say it is more important to reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. than it is to expand legal opportunities for foreign workers to get jobs in the U.S.

However, that doesn't translate into an overwhelming public desire to force illegal aliens out of the country. Thirty-nine percent (39%) of Americans say there should be some way for illegal aliens with a job to stay in the U.S. legally. Forty-four percent (44%) disagree while 17% are not sure.

Fully a quarter (25%) of those who believe reducing illegal immigration is the top priority also believe that some way should be found to keep illegal immigrants in the country legally.

Earlier surveys on immigration have found support for building a barrier along the Mexican border and positive attitudes towards citizen patrols along the border. Another survey found that most Americans consider current immigration laws a threat to both national security and the economy. Three-fourths of all Americans believe it is too easy for people from other countries to enter the United States.

There will be no immigration law , just a House bill and a Senate bill that shall never meet:

House Speaker Dennis Hastert raised the possibility that a program letting illegal immigrants continue to reside in the U.S. for a period of time might be considered by the House if the Senate approves one.

"Our first priority is to protect the borders. We also know there is a need in some sectors of this economy for a guest worker program," Hastert told reporters Wednesday.

However, there is a growing consensus among lawmakers that any merging of the House and Senate measures so that Congress could send a bill to President Bush won't occur until after the November election.

"What you end up doing is the House has passed a bill, the Senate passed a bill and everybody declares victory and you don't get anything out of conference between now and the elections," said Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

Funny, that looks to me like 75% want illegal immigrants the **bleep** out of this country. Not much ambiguity there, except in the mind of the reporter.

Good to see that there is some sanity among the American people. Now if only our elected officials will come to their senses.

What divisive? A vast majority of Americans want illegal immigration stopped. We are not divided, we overwhelming approve.

Ask 'em this. Are you in favor of a bunch of illegals moving in next door? Are you in favor of a bunch of illegals standing outside your place of business soliciting work? You'll see how "divisive" this issue is.

Besides, if they already have a job, they have it illegally. Not only should they be deported, but their employers should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Build the fence! Reagan's amnesty did not address the problem we are suffering now. Bush's current ideas do not address the problem that we will face in another 10-20 years.

Without an effective wall/fence, the problem of illegal aliens will not be solved.

Here's the deal: the Mexican government gets veto power over U.S. immigration policy, and the US loses sovereignty.

How do we know?

In the Mexican Congress, it was recently announced that a document would be drafted, to show support for the protest marches in our country. The Mexican government published advertisements in leading American newspapers calling for the legalization of illegal immigrants (those in the United States, not in Mexico) and "a far-reaching guest workers scheme." Not only that, said the ads, but "in order for a US guest workers program to be viable, Mexico should participate in its design, management, supervision and evaluation."

In other words, the Mexican government wants veto power over U.S. immigration policy.

And they might just get it. Outrageously, many in our own government are only too happy to oblige them.

Ruben Aguilar, spokesman for President Vicente Fox, made this statement to support the marches: "The recent protests carried out in different places in the United States are indicative of the imminent necessity of a migratory accord that corresponds to the interests of both countries, and that especially to the defense of the rights of migrants. The government of the (Mexican) Republic ratifies its commitment to the Mexicans who live in the United States and its intention to work in the defense of their rights ..."

None of this is surprising.

The protestors--carrying Mexican flags---and the Mexican government share the same goals: legalize Mexican illegal aliens and keep the borders open. The Mexican government wins b/c they see it as a way to relieve economic pressure on their government to reform the economy.

Mexico's leaders also work to retain the loyalty of the immigrant mobs so that, even if they become American citizens, they retain their loyalty to Mexico.

And the plan is working thanks to the dupes in the US Congress.

A good start would be to ENFORCE THE LAWS ALREADY ON THE BOOKS!
If they want to strengthen the laws fine, but we do already have laws that are being violated.
Close the border, put enough agents on the line to enforce it. If necessary use other resources like National Guard.
Start arresting and issuing fines to the scummy employers who hire illegals.
Start deporting any and all illegals who are stopped and/or arrested by LE. Good place to start is at their illegal demonstrations.
This can all be done now without any action of Congress. Who is in charge of enforcing our Federal Laws? Wouldn't that be the Executive Branch?

Really? I've seen much closer polls on Bush's popularity labelled as "unquestionable bad news for the President" or words to that effect.

Doesn't seem all that divisive when you read below that headline.

Not only should they be deported, but their employers should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I want them out and I want a wall to be built but, punishing the employers will only hurt the economy. The employers will suffer trying to find employees to do the work already in place. You and I will suffer when We get the bill. This won't be the little burp in the economy so many are quick to say. These illegals are doing the majority of the construction work currently going on. It won't be easy to replace them.

Exactly, all these bills stay in "conference" indefinitely. Critters rarely meet in these conferences, and they are out of town more than in. It's called the art of getting nothing done while playing politics with the fate of our nation.

As the esteemed members of our Congress debate the merits of the immigration bill, thousands our illegal aliens are defiantly crossing the border right now and will continue until our Gov't gets their heads out of their asses!!
