Some Ward-Churchill like self-hater made it up; the natives that the Europeans found passed on several STDs; their "leadership" and "inteligensia" were the chief organizers of the mass murders they carried out against enemies and their own tribes; their "libraries" were piles of pictures painted on animal skins and folded into accordian-shapes. Their education system? Only the very top of the social pyramid had anything like and education, and even that was not what we would consider education. Their lives were nasty, brutish and short, and they were living with a stone age material culture based on extremely frightening myths, which served to keep the natives calm when their "leaders" started cutting out their living hearts as sacrifice to their gods, then kicked their bodies down the side of the "temple" where the killing took place.
