Boehner hints a back down on 'amnesty'
The Washington Times ^ | March 29, 2006 | Charles hurt

Posted on 03/29/2006 7:15:28 AM PST by surely_you_jest

House Majority Leader John A. Boehner refused yesterday to rule out compromising with the Senate to expand the House border security bill to include a guest-worker program or provisions that opponents call "amnesty." "Let's wait and see what the Senate can produce," he told reporters yesterday when asked whether House Republicans would reject the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now in the U.S. to seek citizenship after paying a fine.

I have a simple question for those who are rabid about this issue: We assume that respect for the law is of great importance. The way to reinforce respect for law is to insure that laws that are enacted are strictly, effectively and rigorously enforced. Laws that are not enforced breed contempt and derision. It's similar to threatening your children with some punishment and not following through.

In order to enforce a law calling for the immediate deportation of any and all illegals would require a massive investment of federal law enforcement. We cannot even enforce the laws tht we have.

Which is better: to have a law that you feel great about that is unenforceable or a law that achieves most of your goals that is enforceable?

Ditto. Boehner needs to buried in letters, faxes, phone calls and visits for those who can do it. It needs to be clearly explained to him that if the House votes for a guest worker/amnesty program no matter how it is disguised, that he will no longer be Majority leader because there will be no Republican majority to lead. Maybe the GOP needs a period of quiet thought in the wilderness to break them from the mantra that conservatives have no choice but to support them - no matter what.

"Wimps" is not the word I was searching for.

Quislings, Benedict Arnolds, traitors, fifth columnists...

Those are more appropriate terms, IMO.

Here's what I've heard, a lot of Bush Bashing from "Conservative" Posers and Trolls but what I haven't seen is President Bush signing an "Amnesty" Bill that warrants such bashing.

Why not defend your position instead?

I've made it quite clear that my position on this thread is to ridicule the hysterical bunker brigade. And I'll defend that position to the death!

(Heh heh. Just kidding, boys. Put down the rifles and go back to your cans of Spam.)

Thanks for the link. It's tough to keep up with such an active thread while working. I still think that Coop is violating the personal attacks rule, but I ain't the mod.

How will the provisions of this amnesty be any more enforceable than those of the previous one?

The answer is that they won't, and anyone who thinks that they will be is deluding himself.

>>>>After allowing 12 million illegals in over 20 years, and millions more before that, now you want to complain about fairplay and the rule of law?

I've always supported legal immigration and have always spoken out against US policy of wide open borders and illegal immigration. Amnesty is not the answer.

>>>>The important issue is not the illegals already here, but preventing illegal immigration from today onward.

The issue is whether there will be guest worker-amnesty included in the any border enforcement bill, or whether the House will demand HR 4437 become the new law of the land. I support the latter.

>>>>If we fail to control the border and fail to effectively punish employers of illegals, the problem will only continue.

Read my tagline. On that we agree. And if we do secure the borders, along with punishing employers who violate the law by hiring illegals, we will remove the major incentive for foreigners to come here illegally. WORK * JOBS * EMPLOYMENT

Do you define the vast majority of freepers who are distgusted at this issue as the "hysterical bunker brigade"? I've read DC's posts here for years, and he is most certainly not hysterical and is well liked by almost everyone on here.

Wow, another meaningless non sequitur from our favorite illogical poster, Coop.

I must admit, I wasn't expecting that bold gambit.

I just hate to see FR get divided into groups of opposing views, into a heated debate on an issue that might be debated rationally, if not for a few Rat trolls pressing some hot buttons.

If they keep on this track, the Republicans deserve to lose. Maybe being in the minority will wake them all up.

In case you missed my question earlier,
What bill did Bush sign to give them AMNESTY? I knew Specter was working quickly but I missed the Presidential signing of Congressional Legislation.

Maybe, although I doubt it.

Here's hoping that DeWine is DeLoser come November.

Cool. Maybe he'll sign my yearbook! Oh, wait, that's right. Mr. Tough Marine stomped off in a hissyfit after he didn't get his way with 4,238 abuse reports. ROTFL!

See, Junior, I pinged DC! I got's good manners!

I think it's possible now, to get strong border protection, strong employment enforcement and a guest working plan that does not lead to a cutting of the citizenship line and does not lead to an increase in legal quotas.

But we will never get that because Tancredo and his followers want the 12 million to do a hat dance over the border and back.

I couldn't agree with you more. On all counts.
