Jon Corzine, New Jersey's new Governor, isn't the first politician not to follow through on a campaign promise. But rarely is such dishonesty later presented as a virtue.

A notable previous example, Bill Clinton promising the voters of Arkansas in 1988 that if they reelected him governor he would not run for President in 1992. When he reneged he said it was because that is what the voters wanted him to do. Americans should have grabbed a clue then but many didn't even though the Arkansans did all they could to warn us.
