Republican pollster Jan van Lohuizen, in a memo written for RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, warns that if members of Congress try to drive a wedge between themselves and Pres. Bush, it'd be akin to adding weight to an anchor. GOpers are "W Brand Republicans" whether they like it or not. And van Louhizen, who has polled (often secretly) for the Bush White House under the RNC aegis for years, is worried about low turnout.
Time Magazine first reported on the memo this weekend, but the full text is below.

"The problem is that of perception. Like it or not, the debate has been framed in a way that is alienating legal Hispanic immigrants."
I think your mising the point of the frustration from many conservatives. Bush is the reason for this alienation. He and Rove have scoped this argument to place the base against mexicans and that is not the truth. The truth is that we want LEGAL not illegal immigration. That only happens if we enforce the current laws and require people to obey them.
The GOP is in for rude awakening - but I believe that this may be all a plan anyway to take away our rights. Can Bush be so stupid to not see how most of America does not want this? There is a reason and its not because he cares about you and I - big business and the future loss of our borders is what he is trying to implement.
Our freedoms are about to be whittled away - American is about to be lost - and actually probably already is.
I'm merely pointing out your stupidity. Personally, I'd prefer not to address you at all, but the rules say that if I talk about you, I must ping you.
My comments are intended for the lurkers more so than for you.
"I'm merely pointing out your stupidity. "
No, I think you luuuuuuuv me!
BS
And we're not holding anyone responsible. Don't blame us for the perceptions that *may* exist. Blame the illegals who flagrantly break the law. They create the stereotype, not us.
It's that same with the cabbie who won't pick up a black fare. He and his pals have been robbed or killed enough times by blacks that they are afraid to pick up any black. Is it their fault? Should they risk their lives and money for a small profit? As above, it is the fault of those committing the crime.
Your view is unrealistic and naive given the costs of illegal immigration. It's an invasion by another name.
Your post was great & I often suspect "poser" conservatives on Free Republic...Moles, if you know what I mean.
Republicans can kiss my butt if they are going to sell out to illegal alien intimidation. Back in the 50's they would have called out the Guard for this stuff.
When Bush goes we get President Cheney -- a huge improvement. In my opinion Bush has outdone Clinton in damaging this country, which is no small feat.
Anecdotal is a more appropriate term than empirical.
In a generation or two? So 25 years or so is good enough for you? You are not only a pollyanna, you are out of your mind.
Daily the evidence mounts for anyone willing to look at it. Santorum is not a conservative. The latest -- his pro gun record -- and he claims to be pro gun is abysmal -- voting with us only 64% of the time. Even anti gun Specter has managed a 55% rating.
He just voted to spend extra $7 Billion dollars on some social programs. Did you know that we had an extra $7 Billion dollars laying around not doing anything worthwhile?
Take the blinders off, man. Either Santorum fooled all of us or he sold out. I'm putting my money on the former, but it doesn't matter. The result is the same.
Let me fix that for you.
The problem is not the President, who is doing his best to find a POSITIVE way to frame spin this debate.
There. It's better now.
There's yet another example. You just can't help yourself, can you?
If you think Bush is more harmful to America than Bill the criminal Clinton, then you are not a genuine political observer. At least, not in my opinion.
I suggest you consider getting over your BUSH HATE least you become a member of the Al Franken school of politics.
Typical.
( o )
For the crime of not willing to enact 100% conservative agenda, you will let the President be impeached at the hands of traitors?
I have no personal feelings of "hatred" toward President Bush. However, he has given us out-of-control deficits and encouraged out-of-control illegal immigration beyond a scale that ever occured under President Clinton.
"Bush and the RNC can go straight to hell."
Did you imagine that you would ever say those words?
"I'm a mainstream Republican and very proud of it. If you disagree with me, fine."
One question. Are you a veteran?
