RNC Memo Warns GOPers Not To Distance Themselves From Bush
The Hotline (National Journal) ^ | March 28, 2006

Posted on 03/28/2006 7:52:53 PM PST by Karl Rand

Republican pollster Jan van Lohuizen, in a memo written for RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, warns that if members of Congress try to drive a wedge between themselves and Pres. Bush, it'd be akin to adding weight to an anchor. GOpers are "W Brand Republicans" whether they like it or not. And van Louhizen, who has polled (often secretly) for the Bush White House under the RNC aegis for years, is worried about low turnout.

Time Magazine first reported on the memo this weekend, but the full text is below.

We've had 12 years in power after the toon nearly dismantled everything Pres. Reagan and those before him had accomplished. 12 FREAKING YEARS. It took the DEMONS 40 (FOUR ZERO) nearly uninterrupted years to get the nation where it is today. And many of you want to throw it all away right now because America did not return to the way the Foundng Fathers wanted in less than two decades.

The thing is, we're still moving in the same direction those democrats pointed us in 40 years ago. The Bush administration has not reversed course.

It took Clinton only 8 years to undo Reagan's work. We should expect no less of "our" party. If it still is our party...

Good post.
This thread appears to be a magnet for all the malcontents and hemarrhoid problems here at FR, so I think I'll take the opportunity to sneak off and peruse some other threads. See you around.

People with attitude like yours were the ones who gave us the "great conservative" Bill Clinton.

Wrong. Bush the Elder's breaking of his campaign promise is what gave us Bill Clinton. Quit blaming the conservative voter for having the temerity to have conservative positions on issues and not vote for a pubbie who betrayed those positions.

Oh, and what happened after the GOP losses in the 1992 elections? Why, we got the Contract With America two years later - the GOP examined why they lost, stood up for conservative values, and won both houses the next election. Funny how you failed to mention that.

"I'm sure you are very good at it. Is that another typical trait?"

On of my best traits is that I don't take guff from blowhards.

Note to RNC. It is you and the President who are doing the distancing and not conservatives.

But because our borders are wide open, they can fight us here by simply walking in with whatever weapons they like.

That is the most ignorant, silly-as$ed position that a segment on here continually takes. When the reality is far from it -

The notion that our borders aren't be protected / profiled at all is utterly wrong. But in a variety of ways this is being done can't be stated nor shown publicly that easily (for again a variety of reasons).

The very notion that we haven't been attacked since 9-11 speaks volumes against those who take your silly position regarding our borders.

Are there serious issues involving our borders and immigration? Most certainly. But the notion that ME men or women can walk / drive across our borders with bombs, WMDs, ect, ect is utterly foolishness. It isn't so.

Nor should all the ways we are stopping such an act from happening but told to the public!

GWB is the most serious CIC we've had in office in a long, long time regarding the issues of National security.

People who suggest putting the trash of Democrats in office as a favor for what this CIC has done (with all the arrows he has taken for not only National Security but for the Conservative movement...and done so with nothing but class and leadership)....that there are those of you who suggest it will "serve him right" to have Democrats in control of congress.....You people are of the same disgusting ilk as the trash of the Democratic leadership today.

And many of you want to throw it all away right now because America did not return to the way the Foundng Fathers wanted in less than two decades. Patience, thy name is not conservatism.

Wow, more wait and see. Of course beginning a return to the ideals of the Framers includes signing the largest entitlement bill in this nation's history, expanding more government funding for education, and prosecuting a military action with an ever changing goal ('spreading democracy' contrary to the Wilsonians is not a clear and defined goal) does it?

I just can't wait to see what's next!! Of course conservatives, and rightly so, should find humor in all of this. Some of us spoke up, but no one was listening. We had to win back the White House, we had to win back the Senate, and we had to keep the House. And what have we got out of it? A party that still ridiculously claims a limited government policy, yet another nation on our government's dole for the next generation at least, and yet another amnesty bill. Heck, who needs to wait?? 'Conservatism' is already here!!

Suffice to say I completely disagree with your view of national security. We will have a long time presence in the ME becasue the ME needed to be changed. And your right about NoKo. It has Nukes. And therefore sacrificing Seoul to invade them was not a viable option.

And waiting for Saddam and Iran to get Nukes is crazy. Best to fight this battle now. And Iraq WILL be a long term ally. Unless you believe the NY times version of things.

Afghanistan has been going better than anyone expected in such a short period of time. Had we just crushed the taliban and left, the Iranians or some other pestilence would have filled the void. Are there parts of the country that are not fully up to speed...sure. But the Afghan army is being trained and they are wiping the remnants of taliban up very well, with our help.

An Iran is next.

Bush has campaigned on a "guest worker program" the whole time..

He also campaigned as a "compassionate conservative"..

He never said he was what everyone thinks he should be, a "Reagan Conservative" ...even though Reagan IS the one that started the precedent of giving amnesty to illegals.

Too late, Bush and the RNC distanced themselves from GOP voters.

Ok, so I'll take it as a term of affection.

But I don't think it's kooky to support a guy who, in my opinion, would fight a stronger war on terror than any other candidate out there. And I don't think it's kooky to support a guy who would almost certainly beat any Democrat candidate out there.

"Don't forget that B.S. response to the affirmative action lawsuit."

Thank you. I forgot about that, and someone else mentioned campaign finance/free speech reform. I liked my free speech better before it got 'reformed'. I also neglected to mention the whole thing with the AWB, which the President offered to sign if it got through Congress. Thankfully, Congress received a copy of the US Constitution at the last second and didn't pass a new ban, but the President had committed to signing a new ban if it made it to his desk.

Yeah, next thing you know somebody will be claiming that large quantities of drugs come across the border from Mexico.

President Bush needs the republicans in Congress more than they need him right now. If he loses the Congress, he will be powerless in the remaining years in office. His only chance to accomplish anything is to support republicans whether or not they support his ill advised policies, particularly his spending and his immigration policies.

Partial Birth Abortion?
ANWR even being proposed?
AWB sunset?
Senesenbrenner's bill?
WOT?

We didn't get where we are overnight. We have to gradually turn back that way. This is a good start. Let's not ruin it.
