An Al-Qa'eda cell wanted to launch a suicide-bomb attack in Britain using one of their members, who worked for London Underground, the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

Omar Khyam, 24, his brother Shujah ud din Mahmood, 19, Jawad Akbar, 22, Nabeel Hussain, 20, and Waheed Mahmood, 34, all from Crawley, West Sussex, along with Anthony Garcia, 24, from Ilford, Essex and Salahuddin Amin, 31, from Luton, all deny conspiracy to cause explosions.

Mohammed Babar, who has turned informant on the other members of the gang, said that the man intended for the martyrdom operation had refused because he did not trust the others. He was referred to only as Imran, but was said to be from Britain and to walk with a limp because he had been in an accident. "We had numerous conversations about Imran," Babar said.

"The first discussion was that [Mr Khyam] was going to use him for operations in the UK or Europe that he was planning.

"I asked Imran if he wanted to do it. He said 'no' because he thought that those guys would never carry it out."

Khyam and Salahuddin Amin were said to answer to a man called "Q" in Luton, who was given instructions by Abdul Hadi, the number three in al-Qa'eda.

The prosecution alleges that half a ton of ammonium nitrate bought in Britain was for a domestic attack.

The trial continues.
