Levin queries Abu Ghraib workers about detainee abuse

U.S. soldiers who worked at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq while detainees were being abused there have received letters from U.S. Sen. Carl Levin asking about the involvement of higher-ranking officials in authorizing harsh interrogation tactics, a lawyer for a convicted military policeman said Tuesday.

The letters from the Michigan senator follow Democrats' failure to persuade Congress to open an independent investigation into allegations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and other U.S. military detention facilities. The letters were first reported Tuesday by The Washington Post.

Former Army staff sergeant Ivan L. "Chip" Frederick, a military police reservist serving more than eight years in prison for abuse at Abu Ghraib, got one of Levin's questionnaires several weeks ago, said his civilian attorney, Gary Myers.

The first wave of letters was sent in recent weeks to about 50 military intelligence soldiers and MPs who were affiliated with Abu Ghraib in late 2003 and early 2004, the newspaper reported. Separate questionnaires are being developed for people who worked at detention facilities at Bagram, Afghanistan; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and locations in Iraq, including at Qaim, where an Iraqi general was killed during an interrogation in November 2003.

The first letter states that an examination is being conducted into "alleged mistreatment by U.S. personnel, the factors that may have contributed to such mistreatment, and the accountability of officials for policies, actions, or failures to act, which may have contributed to detainee abuse," the Post reported.

The letter poses 19 questions, including who authorized tactics such as isolation, nudity, sleep manipulation, the use of dogs, stress positions and placing detainees in female underwear. It also requests descriptions of how Army Special Forces soldiers, contractors and "other government agencies" — usually a euphemism for the CIA — may have ordered or directed mistreatment.

Nudity is a tactic? I thought it was a state of being.

I urge any of the drooling morons who believe that the hazing-like incidents at Abu Ghraib were "torture" to visit this link and view the video of actual torture and murder proudly committed and videotaped by the Fedayeen Saddam.

"isolation, nudity, sleep manipulation, the use of dogs, stress positions and placing detainees in female underwear"

THIS IS TORTURE? This is what the Left has gotten so worked up about?

F*ck you Senator Levin and all your anti-American comrades. I hope you rot in hell.

Levin is essentially concocting an 'investigation' with the media's assistance: unless these requests are part of a formal Senate investigation, he is simply creating the appearance of an 'inquiry' when he has no legal authority to do so.

Once he has created a fake 'investigation', he will then solicit disgruntled former Abu Ghraib soldiers to blame Bush and Rumsfeld, and then the media will say, "a Senate investigation has concluded ... ... blah blah ... it's all Bush's fault."

It's all a fraud, and I wish he'd be reported to a US attorney's office for mail fraud.

Wow, torture sure sounds a lot like my ex's idea of a good weekend.

...such as isolation, nudity, sleep manipulation, the use of dogs, stress positions and placing detainees in female underwear.

Sounds like pledge week at the local fraternity.

In the days following 9/11 I often said "I hope to hell that there is someone duct taped to a chair losing his fingernails to fix this situation"

My uncle was a Japanese POW in the Philipine for 4 years. I never dared ask him if he thought that was torture

I'm tellin' you Levin gets stupider by the minute. Do you think even one of these men would put themselves in jeapordy for the likes of a politician who is on a mission to destroy their commander-in-chief?

He is counting on the law of big numbers. If 1999 troopers burn that letter and one whining SOB sees his 15 minutes of fame, it is still a win for the left. I have friends with family in MI, I cant do much, but perhaps I can lose him a vote or two
