Bush asks Congress to boost green cards
The Washington Times ^ | March 28, 2006 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 03/28/2006 11:13:11 AM PST by Cboldt

President Bush yesterday told Congress to increase legal immigration and temporary visas as part of the debate over illegal aliens and enforcement.

"I've called on Congress to increase the number of green cards that can lead to citizenship," Mr. Bush said. "I support increasing the number of visas available for foreign-born workers in highly skilled fields like science, medicine and technology." ...

The president first called for more green cards in 2004 when he announced his guest-worker proposal. Green cards signify permanent legal residence and are the key intermediate step toward citizenship.

Mr. Bush has not said how big an increase he seeks. ...

White House spokesman Scott McClellan would not say whether Mr. Bush would veto a bill that addresses only border security.

"...highly skilled fields like science, medicine and technology." ...

But I thought they were only here to do the jobs that Americans wouldn't do?

Is it my imagination or is there an all-out attack underway on the wage-earning power of American citizens, skilled or unskilled?

I'm fine with increasing and even expediting legal immigration... AFTER we deport illegals and make them ineligible to apply for legal status.

How about giving Green Cards to those who have been working through the system for years on end? How about some legislation empowering those with Green Cards to walk up to an employer and demand the job of anyone who doesn't have legal documents?

You ever get the feeling that democrats and republicans only pretend to oppose each other, only to pass the ball back and forth between them?

"Is it my imagination or is there an all-out attack underway on the wage-earning power of American citizens, skilled or unskilled?"

It's true. And the "loyal opposition" Democrats are so loyal to this attack on the middle and lower classes nary a peep is heard in the MSM.

The silence in the MSM, the lack of any investigation in any detail is appalling.

The way things shaping up the Repubs have to make a vocal, clean break from Bush soon to save 2006 election. The MSM is spinning that the repubs are behind this and a racist faction (80% of the public) are the troublesome herd Bush has to deal with. Without distinctions pointed out the many voters will assume it's the repubs behind this attack.

Hmm. How about we do something about the current green card process first and clear up the back log that is causing such head aches to those already trying to get them legally?

Bush's willingness on an increase in Green Cards is an attempt to split a few democrats away from the party line.

Unfortunately, neither the democrats, nor the House Immigration Caucus, will support Bush's compromise.

What an absurd comment by Bush, we have kids getting out of college that can't find jobs in these fields and he is inviting more foreign workers into the country.Bush has his head up you know where on this issue.

You lost me there. What Democratic party line is different than Bush's?

My stepdaugher has been waiting for four years, and has another 6 to go. She is being sponsored by her mom, a citizen. In the interim she is not allowed to visit her mom in America, and that is our laws not Russian. Yep, Bush, some senators, and representatives don't give a damn about those trying to be legal. Quite frankly their attitude is evil.

At the very least, Dubya should be registered as a foreign agent.
