For first time, Palestinians fire Katyusha rocket from Gaza

For the first time, Palestinians fired a 122mm Katyusha rocket, a much longer-range projectile than the Qassam, from the Gaza Strip into Israel, the IDF confirmed Tuesday night.

The Katyusha was fired Tuesday morning. It caused no injuries or damage.

Israel Channel 10 Television said the rocket was apparently fired by the Islamic Jihad, which had vowed to try to disrupt the Tuesday general election.

Remains of the rocket were discovered in searches of areas hit by rockets south of Ashkelon.

Military sources said the potential range of the Katyusha is some 15 kilometers, about six kilometers longer than that of the Qassam.

This would place a much larger number of Israeli towns and villages in danger of being hit by rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, including the southern coastal city of Ashkelon.

It is believed that the Katyusha fired from Gaza was smuggled into the Strip, apparently across the Gaza-Egypt border from Sinai.

Democracy sure does seem to have caused those crazy kids in Palestine to mend their ways, hasn't it? Can someone remind me again why giving them their own country was a good idea?

Destroy everything in an arc within the firing range of the rocket.

I am always amazed how easily the world shrugs off this permanent threat. Arab's ineptitude and Israel's security forces effectiveness (most people miss on the fact that they intercept the vast majority of the homicidals before they can do harm) makes it somehow more "tolerable". If the former were more and later less effective, more blood would make the Israel's case more pressing. But for now it paradoxically stays under the (artificially high) threshold.

Nevertheless, I doubt any other country would tolerate even badly shot rockets flying from over the border...

Yeah, Rice will be all over this. She forced Israel into accepting the arrangements at this border crossing, then went on her merry way. That did it for me, with regard to Rice.

Do you remember the he11 that was raised on this forum when Hillary suggested the Palestinian's needed a state, then when GW actually officially called for a Palestinian state, the first President to ever do so, SILENCE.

Can't help but wonder what Hamas might start bringing in from their kin in Iran to try lobbing over the wall.

They must love it, having their artillery / rocket batteries so close to their target. Thanks a lot, US State Dept..

Oh; wait!; It's not our fault; the Saudis made us do it!

I'm hoping that Israel will hit sufficient oil reserves so that they can tell Condi and Co. to go pound Arabian sand and go away. Then they might have a shot at survival.

What's up with a report I heard on the radio today about a contract between a US and Israeli firm being nixed because Israel was considered to be a "security risk"?

It's just getting crazier and crazier.

You sure that's what you want? The range of a 122mm Grad rocket is around 20 KM, as I recall, with some of the newer HE and cargo rockets out to about 30 kilometers. But that may not be the worst problem facing the Israelis....

The Hezbollah missile threat to Israel has expanded not only in quantity but also in quality. In recent years, the group's operational artillery reach has grown. Experts and analysts generally put the Hezbollah rocket force somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 missiles.[3] The heart of this arsenal remains rooted in Hezbollah's massive stocks—perhaps 7,000 to 8,000—of 107mm and 122mm Katyusha rockets, virtually all of which were supplied directly from existing Iranian army stocks.[4]

In the past, these were used to attack Israeli border towns and settlements. Hezbollah wields two variations of the 107mm rocket, one man-held while the other is fired from the approximately 144 Haseb-type multi-barrel rocket launcher mobile systems provided to Hezbollah by Iran. The 107mm has a small payload and an effective range of just over 5 miles. Most of Hezbollah's more deadly 122mm rockets are man-portable, but the organization does field over 70 mobile Noor, Hadid, and Awash multi-barrel rocket launcher systems which fire heavier rounds with warheads weighing over 100 pounds capable of reaching targets up to 20 miles away.[5]

Of far greater concern to Israel than these antiquated and relatively short-range projectiles are Hezbollah's growing stocks of Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 rockets. Iran began large-scale delivery of the Fajr-3 in 2000 and the Fajr-5 in 2002, with the approval of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.[6] Iranian cargo and passenger jets transport the weaponry from Iran to Damascus International Airport where they can be off-loaded by Hezbollah agents and members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. The weapons are then trucked to the Bekaa Valley. Other reports suggest some Iranian cargo flights land at Beirut International Airport, providing Hezbollah with a more direct supply route although this process may have changed with the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon and the change in Lebanese government.[7]

See #14 above. Additional:

Because of its high volume of fire and large area coverage, the BM-21 is well suited for use against troops in the open, for use in artillery preparations, and for delivery of chemical concentrations. One volley from a BM-21 battalion is 720 rounds. Because these weapons have a large circular area probable (CEP), they are not suited for attacks against point targets.

Not specifically, but it doesn't surprise me. Down deep I wonder if most of us wouldn't like to see that in a perfect world, one which saw two peaceful states sitting side by side. The problem is, it will NEVER happen. You know that. Just about everyone knows that except Palestinian appologists and political leaders that are not condemned to live under the dangers they create for others.

And Hamas is no terrorist organization; so says Vlady Putin(puken?) The 'sht' is getting deep and Russia, Iran and others are just loving it. I'm sure Condi is right on this manageable escalation(not!).

My daughter was driving outside Sderot and a dud Qassam clobbered a bunch of dirt about 150 meters from her car about 1-1/2 months ago. If she gets hurt I hope the IDF needs an old nasty dog like me.

Oh I don't know. We tolerate folks shooting at our border patrol and local law enforcement from across our southern border. And people wearing the uniform of another country setting up machine guns on *our* side of the border as well.
