The full U.S. Senate today begins debating legislation dealing with what arguably is the most vexing domestic issue facing this country: the crisis of uncontrolled illegal immigration........what its proponents disingenuously refer to as the cause of "undocumented immigrants." It is not about ending legal immigration.
But as the president told new immigrants at a swearing-in ceremony, this is a nation of laws - and "to keep the promise of America, we must enforce the laws of America . . . No one is served by an immigration system that allows large numbers of people to sneak across the border illegally."
After all, 9/11 provided a deadly lesson in how dangerously porous America's borders truly are.
Problem is, what should be done with the 11 million or so illegal immigrants already here - and who continue to enter, mostly from Mexico, at the rate of 500,000 a year?
The House voted last December to criminalize illegal immigrants and those who aid them, as well as businesses that fail to verify the legal status of all employees.
The Senate - and President Bush - favor less-harsh measures.............
Their cause was not helped over the past few days by the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators who took to the streets across the nation to protest any crackdown on illegal immigration. Folks who have been asked to support outsiders seeking to share in the "American dream" likely were shocked by the thousands waving Mexican flags and chanting "Mexico, Mexico."
The marches were provocative...........Is it not reasonable also to see in them an implicit bid to effectively move Mexico's border north?
All the more reason why simply declaring what is illegal to be legal won't work; nor will blanket amnesty do the trick. Yet that essentially is what the Judiciary Committee approved late yesterday...............

The Hyphenate Syndrome at its most depraved----they come here to suckup the benefits America has to offer, but they pledge loyalty to another country.
There's something wrong with that.......more than wrong, there are laws against it.
All the politicans who fellate the expanding number of hyphenates, and give them America's tax assets to buy their votes, are culpabable.
They think it is their right.
Frankly that thinking needs to be cutoff hard before it gets any further.
They live here and take from us but they believe they belong to another country? Sounds like moslems.....
Senator Frist stated today on NBC "the problems at the southern border is second only to the war on terror"!!!
He recognizes the CRISIS America is in right now folks.
WE cannot allow them to demonstrate and make DEMANDS on us "gringo's". Are you going to take their insults that they are adding as insult to injury?
NO AMNESTY NO "guest" WORKER PROGRAM!!
PASS HR4437 and get tougher on border security NOW WE DEMAND!!!!
They started all this fight and war by theire "in your face" waving the mexican flag and screaming demands at us.
Andy Card leaving WH!
There are a lot of Mexicans I've talked to that believe the SW USA rightfully belongs to Mexico. This is a very dangerous situation, IMO.
Cindo De Mayo Mexican flag burning party at my house next week.

It's Not Xenophobia, It's Xenonausea--It is not Xenophobia. It is Xenonausea. People are sick of having the whole world shoved down their throats at once and being told it tastes like ice cream. They are sick of every street corner and parking lot being filled with criminal aliens waiting to work off the books and outside the laws that are applied so enthusiastically to actual Americans. They are sick of pressing 1 for English. They are sick of being at war with foreign terrorists and simultaneously being economically and demographically bound more tightly to the nations producing these terrorists. They are sick of being told that the world is global or flat or smaller or at their doorstep or all coming for dinner on Tuesday
But we don't enforce them. Like everything else, politicians speak stearnly, then pass the next "DEFINITIVE & FINAL" law on the subject, only to watch it be ignored.
The correct response to this unrest / insurgecy would be to SLAM the border shut and round up those on the streets checking their citizenship and SHIPPING those that don't belong home.
Instead, we have a euroweenie response to a true crisis.......I'm beyond upset over this...........
Mexico is not N. Korea or Iran. Demonstrations aren't illegal in Mexico.
They have 100's of thousands demonstrating here who (by all the flag-waving) apparently love Mexico. So, why aren't they demonstrating in Mexico to get their beloved country to make the neccessary changes and improvements, so they can all live in a better Mexico and not have to risk their lives (not to mention break laws) to come to the U.S.?
They should be protesting the Mexican gov't in Mexico to change things there. Not protesting in our country to change things here.
First, let's enforce the laws on the books.
DEPORT illegal immigrants NOW. STOP illegal immigration NOW.
Let's do what we SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING all along.
We've had huge amnesty programs before --it didn't solve anything.
The arrogance of these people----in stores, on the street, as workers in our homes-----as if they are doing us a favor being here illegaly, sucking up tax assets and social and political benfits patriotic Americans created with their blood, sweat, and tears.
The sense of hyphenate entitlement is an outrage.
LMFAO
You really don't think he believes that? Frist has no interest in doing the right thing. He only says those things to try and make us shut up. Our Republic is being destroyed by the cancer of PC and this massive wave of illegal immigration. I can't see ANY politician doing the right thing. We are reaping what the evil leftist Socialist Welfare statists have sown. We think we are "winning" but the left has won. Very little today resembles the Republic our Founders gave us. The Republicans in Congress today are far to the left of most Democrats of 30 years ago.
