Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

If Senator Kennedy is that enthusiastic, my gosh, I shudder to think.

Just saw Frist on H&C, he is caving fast, he will do naught, only hope is the house congress critters, and that hope is thin gruel indeed.

Just heard Major Garrett on Fox say the Frist will not let this bill come to the Senate floor...

That's good news if Frist keeps it off the floor, hopefully there'll be confirmation of it but I haven't seen anything yet.

Face it, the Republicans are scared to death of this issue, the last time republicans stood up on the illegal alien issue it turned California into a democratic state, which it has remained ever since.

If they play this wrong, Texas could turn democratic (which would doom the Republicans for a generation or more), I hardly recognize Texas anymore, Mexicans are taking over.

I suggest we take as many discreet, candid photos of all of this and enclose them in multiple letters to our federal reps, and to our local, city, county and state officials, including police and sheriff departments.

Time to provide evidence of our claims to all of our representatives.

I'll try to find and post the Social Security form letter that warns employers not to fire illegals who have SS#'s that are invalid, or do not match the registered SS records.

No, it isn't 1 man, it is millions of foreign bureaucrats, millions of illegal entrants, corporatists and sellouts who are accomplishing their goal.

I dunno. I closed out 2 projects, finished the coordination on 1, and worked on the planning and logistics for another today. After spending an hour and a half at the title company, closing a Texas real estate deal. It was a good days work, for a good days pay. At no point did I encounter, deal with, or worry about the millions of illegal entrants, corporatists (This probably makes me one), or sellouts. Yet I am positive that the hedgetrimmer will work Saturday :0)

Anything that is amnesty or smacks of amnesty perpetuates the system, and that's what "W" supported. This has to be brought to a big screeching halt because we cannot tolerate slavery.

We will need to pay them back come November. They all deserve to lose.

I pray to God that the Republican party will go down to such a stunning defeat on 06 and 08 that this traitorous party will never be heard from again. Rot in hell, Republicans. Lousy, good for nothing traitorous whores. You've outsourced all our decent jobs, you've signed traitorous trade agreements, and you have destroyed America by turning it into the second hell of Mexico. I have never voted Democrat in my life but in 06 and 08 I am voting straight Democrat. They are a bunch of traitors too, but at least I won't make myself puke by voting for any Republican. Hillary, here I come.

"That's good news if Frist keeps it off the floor"

He'll bring it for a vote- if the latest reports I've seen are accurate. Our hopes are with the House.

California was always a Democrat state ~ sometimes punctuated with a Republican win here or there.

Ridiculous ~ you and your little friends vote for the Democrats and they'll up your taxes to 90% again, and give it all away to the illegals to spend on liquor and whores.

DOWN WITH PRESIDENT BUSH! I AM SO SORRY THAT I CAMPAIGNED FOR HIM IN THE FIRST CAMPAIGN DURING THE PRIMARIES.

Don't be sorry. We knew what we were getting and he was the best we could do at the time.

and calling American citizens engaged in lawful activity "vigilantes" isn't being a bit over the top in the rhetoric department ?

"somebody who punishes lawbreakers personally and illegally rather than relying on the legal authorities"
