Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

5.) I think he is every bit as guilty as Clinton of being a draft-dodger. Talk about spoiled rich kids, his story reads like a manual on how to be one.

Yeah right.

Your hero clinton during the same time.

I have a problem when capitalism is in the hands of a tiny minority of elites, who are willing to sell out their own nation for the almighty dollar.

LOL!!! Maybe the humble hardworking and grateful illegal aliens lawbreakers can send the RNC many pesos, especially the 29% who are hardworking thugs, rapists and murderers that are currently enjoying the hospitality offered during their incarceration in American prisons.

Well, somebody had to take it from the elitist, country club Republicans.

Oh, and that be you?

You trolls can barely contain yourself anymore, can you?

In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.

Let me ask you something seriously. If the guest worker plan goes through and there are illegals who refuse to sign up, will you favor deporting said illegals?

I have never voted for a Democrat in my life. Sherrod Brown will be the first.

DeWine has a lifetime ACU rating of 82% conservative. Sherrod Brown has a lifetime ACU rating of 9% conservative.

With all due respect poster, only a dope would vote for Brown.

Are you honestly saying that George W Bush did not have it easy during Vietnam because of his father?

Nothing was better than this crap!

You're right. We already had laws on books that are not getting enforced. This bill will just be another law that nobody will enforce.

What we have to do is gain control of our borders, all of them. Then we can turn our attention to the illegals in our country.

Not passing any bill is the same as amnesty as far as I'm concerned. We need a good bill to pass or we vote the culprits out of office.

I think you are smarter than that sentence would suggest. No bill is NOT amnesty, and you know it. Those of you who disagree don't do yourselves any favors going off like that. Don't you want to be taken seriously?

A lot of people are emoting and thinking seems to have gone out the window.

That always happens when immigration is discussed. Always.

When Brownback is called a traitor, Bush is called "the worst president ever", is there any doubt remaining that the kooks have taken over this forum?

No, there is absolutely no doubt. But, that has always been the case when immigration is discussed.

FR has turned into an immigration forum, as more bandwidth is burned up on this issue than any other.

This piggybacks on the DPW ports deal. Hysteria reigns when puffing up one's chest and ranting and raving against "them" becomes the order of the day.

George Bush trained in a fighter jet that was known for killing pilots. He did quite well. I don't think risking your neck in a deadly profession ranks with having it easy, as you suggest.

Yep. Just ask Dingy "I killed the Patriot Act" Harry, or Ted "Alito is an extremist" Kennedy, or Russ "Illegal Wiretap" Feingold, or the circulation dept of the anti-war NY Times, or Chuck "it's a quagmire" Hagel who is currently running about 23rd in presidential polling.

Yep, the Prez is all out of bullets.

Ditto, support Frist.

Frist is not against a guest worker program or some form of shamnesty - he's making a distinction without a difference by plugging for a border control bill to come first. Read his words carefully.
