Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

I'm sick of it, time for another Boston Tea Party.

American taxpayers need to stand up for our forefathers, it came to them, it's now come to us.

No taxation without representation!!

We, the taxpayers have no representation in our leaders. The house has done well, the Congress and Executive branch are too rich to care about taxpayers. Time to get the word out, April 15th is coming, no taxation without representation! I'm tired of being disgusted, it's time to act. We American citizens will not stand in the street and block traffic, etc, we aren't like that, but we can fight with taxation and voting! It's time to strike back!

No, like I have said before, it is not just because of this issue. Four your benefit, I will flat out tell what I dislike about this President.

1.) I think he has handled the war in Iraq with utter incompetence. You might not want to admit it, but there is virtually no way of actually winning this war. Despite the best efforts of our men and women in uniform, it is an impossible war to win.
2.) I think his economic policies will prove to be disastrous, and he caters to Corporate America, a group of people whom I admittedly do not care for.
3.) Illegal Immigration- He refuses to listen to the American people on this issue. He is an elitist snob who was handed everything in life.
4.) And this will probably cause the most uproar. I don't think he is that smart, and certainly not smart enough to be President. I think he got through school because of his name.
5.) I think he is every bit as guilty as Clinton of being a draft-dodger. Talk about spoiled rich kids, his story reads like a manual on how to be one.
6.) I believe that he is 100% reliant on people like Karl Rove, who in turn crafts policy based on what the WSJ wants.
7.) I don't think being a GREAT public speaker should be a requirement for holding the highest office in the land, but for God sakes, it is painful to listen to him give a speech. I mean, c'mon, he sounds like a 5 year old stumped at a school spelling bee the way he mispronounces and stumbles over every word. It is embarrassing.

Frist's "bill" won't get anywhere, or will be filibustered by Harry Reid.

Reid's objection is yet another reason, besdes the awkward substitution of leader will for Committee will, that the Committee bill will be the one taken up.

Frist is being coy about all this. The cloture vote for taking up "the" (whichever) immigration bill has been postponed to 2:15 tomorrow afternoon.

Oh, and hell is freezing over, and pigs are flying -- seeing as how I agree with you on something ;-)

We're in basic agreement. Whatever the numbers of illegal aliens actually is today, its much larger then it was in 1986. This problem will never be solved by granting backdoor amnesty under the guise of a guest worker program. The border door has to shut first and employers have to be held accountable for hiring illegals.

If we allow the Bush-Kennedy-McCain proposal to be passed into law, it will mark the beginning of the end for the America most of us have known in our lifetimes.

"This is not the end of the republic. This is not the end of the republic. Anyone calling for violent uprising is not a patriot"
-------
On what grounds do you justify your claim? Your stance is basically the same as a Loyalist during the American Revolution who essentially said the same thing as you. Our Founding Fathers were considered outlaws and pariahs and would have been hanged for treason had their cause not succeeded. The Declaration of Independence does indeed say that governments should not be changed for light and transient causes, but it also says that it is the duty of the people to alter or abolish it, if it becomes destructive of its purpose. If the people feel that their government is destructive of its purpose, they most certainly do have a right to alter or abolish it. Pray that it never has to happen, but it is one of the sovereign rights retained by the people.

GWB has zero political capital to pull a full court press on anyone. either the votes are there for it (or come compromise), or they aren't.
