An Online Syndicate Plans to Challenge News Wires (Dinosaur Media Extinction Alert)
New York Times ^ | March 27, 2006 | Sara Ivry

In a world where à la carte can describe a way to choose online content, it was only a matter of time until an on-demand news syndication service for audio and video, in addition to text and pictures, landed on the menu.

This week, Mochila, a service that calls itself a media marketplace, will be introduced in Chicago at Nexpo, an annual newspaper industry conference.

Mochila will be a place where newspapers, magazines, Web sites and broadcasters sell content to other publications. Initially, Mochila will only allow the exchange of text and photographs, but it plans to add audio and video content. Mochila, pronounced mo-CHEE-luh, is the Spanish word for knapsack; mochilas were used by the Pony Express.

Metro International, which publishes free Metro newspapers in 19 countries, has also signed a deal with Mochila. "This is an incredible chance to get some qualified competition to those news wires we use all over the world," said Per Mikael Jensen, the company's global editor in chief.

His enthusiasm notwithstanding, Mr. Jensen said Metro was not about to cancel deals with traditional news wires like The A.P. and Agence France-Press. "With A.P., you pay for the brand value and the trust. One of the problems with a syndication like Mochila is you don't know the ethical standards of the publishers," he said. "Until you get to know your suppliers, I think a combination will be very helpful."

One of the problems with a syndication like AP is that you do.

"With AP, you pay for the brand value and the trust..."

Actually, for MSM publishers, that's a true statement. They trust the AP to impart a leftward spin on stories every chance they get.

The thinking that AP, Reuters or any other traditional MSM is a valued brand with consumers is laughable.

The media has gotten so bad that I now look at alternative sources within a framework of truth until they're disproven. Likewise I read MSM news brands like I'd read Pravda in the bad old days. There's some truth in there if you can wrap your thought around the obvious spin to the issues.

Yeah, I started laughing at the same point, no doubt.

I suggested this five years ago. With the power and connections Free Republic has or could develop, we could have become just such a syndicate. It's good to see that someone is making the idea a reality, but we need to guard against it becoming just another liberal pipeline.
