The Immigration Debate: GOP COMMITS SUICIDE!

In elections one earns political capital. Once spent, c’est tout. Consumed capital cannot be replenished by a cauterized constituency, and today the Republican base boils.

I recently spoke to someone who volunteered for Bush’s 2004 campaign. I asked whether he would work for the GOP in 2008, and he bemoaned “no.” I asked why, and he replied, “It’s a sad day when Democrats like Dianne Feinstein are tougher on immigration than Republicans like Sam Brownback.”

The avalanche of support that has followed Republicans since 1994 we now see slowly evaporating over the issue of a guest-worker program. Impassioned Republicans four years ago now stand out of steam, feeling betrayed by a party leadership that would support a bill so at odds with conservative principles.

This guest-worker proposal, after all, rewards illegal behavior. Instead of requiring illegal immigrants to return to Mexico (or wherever) to apply for a permit, it grants legal status on the spot, thus acting as a “magnet for continued illegal immigration.” And, as Rep. John Hostettler (R.-Ind.) recently said, any guest-worker plan “puts the interest of foreign, illegal workers above those of our own American citizens.”

Newt Gingrich summed up the matter most succinctly on the O’Reilly Factor (March 15, 2006). He has observed a growing divide between Washington GOP elites and the average voting Republican. Somehow, GOP elites have come to believe that a guest-worker program is necessary (although it is not). Your average GOP voter, however, while praising boosts to border security, deeply dislikes any guest-worker giveaway.

Why GOP leadership supports such a lemon remains unseen. In 1986 Congress passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act. It granted green cards to three million illegal immigrants, consequently attracting yet another five million to cross the border to replace their decriminalized comrades. Furthermore, a recent poll taken in Mexico found that at least 46 percent of the population (50 million Mexicans) would cross the border if given the chance. Any guest-worker initiative advertises this avenue.

It is in future forecasts, however, that Republicans really blunder. Illegal immigrants, voting for socialist candidates in Mexico or South America, will become Democrats once gaining full citizenship. Superficial surveys taken in a couple cities show that 9 out of 10 illegal immigrants support Democrats over Republicans. This guest-worker program, on a silver platter, will hand over California, Florida, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico to Democrats.

Is the GOP abating its base and fallowing its future in one fell swoop?

The republicans need to remember one thing: Proposition 200 passed in Arizona by 57% with over 50% of the Hispanic population voting for it. Prop 200 made it mandatory for everyone to show a valid ID to vote.

See this (the CFR goal is clear: "a common economic space ... for all people in the region, a space in which trade, capital, and people flow freely." The CFR's "integrated" strategy calls for "a more open border for the movement of goods and people." ).

The best known Americans who participated in the CFR Task Force that wrote this document are former Massachusetts Governor William Weld and Bill Clinton's immigration chief Doris Meissner. Another participant, American University Professor Robert Pastor, presented the CFR plan at a friendly hearing of Senator Richard Lugar's Foreign Relations Committee on June 9(05).

It starts with your local central committee who allow the candidates to be selected in a top down process from the national comittee instead of a bottoms up process from the people. Most central comittees have been taken over by RINOs and worse, and you don't have to wonder why no loyal American candidates are being put up for these offices.

I'm with you Chief. I have been thinking long and hard about this. Why should I pay one penny in taxes to a State and Fed Govt that blatantly has 2 sets of rules. One for the dumb honest tax payer, one for those that say the Heck with you American Taxpayer and the Heck with your laws, gimme mine.

I wish a movement could start with some top-notch, brilliant, truly conservative lawyers
and tax accountants who could draw up legal plans to not pay taxes. I'm sure in the end it would turn to armed conflict, but what if the Govt said Personal Income Taxes are now 70% - would we fight then?

Has it ever dawned on you that a guest worker program will completely price low income/skill blacks (and whites for that matter) out of the job market ? Don't you think that whatever their politicians say they are realizing that ? Don't you see that politicial seismic shifts occur when there is this kind of clash between the socioeconomic survival of the led and the elite-serving interests of the 'leaders' ?

Good points. You're right. An example is Bob Dole. Does anyone know anyone who wanted--or even voted in the primaries for--Bob Dole? I don't. Clinton was vulnerable, and that was what we got.

Time to hit 'em where it hurts. It's obvious that GWB has no qualms about going against the will of 80% of the people of the US. We've essentially "lost him" to the globalists.

Our only recourse is to make it known to all of the Senators / Congressmen that whom ever follows GWB's lead in going against the will of 80+% of the population of the US will soon get their "walking papers"... maybe they can apply for Mexican citizenship and become politicians south of the border.

On free trade and immigration there are two parties and they aren't the GOP and the Dems. There is The Party of Money and the party without. The Party of Money has supporters in both parties and is frankly indifferent to either. It was, after all, Clinton who gave them NAFTA.

The Party of Money has the decisive voice in the nominee in either party. They are the reason why incumbency is so entrenched. Incumbent politicians, looking forward to lucrative lobbyist or consultant positions after their political careers are over, do its bidding.

In 2004 we had a choice between a candidate who wanted to make the US part of Europe and a candidate who wanted to make the US part of Latin America. At least during 2004 Bush kept his mouth shut about that part. Kerry has always been proud of being a European on the wrong side of the Atlantic.
