I remember how hard it affected Lester Maddox when he lost his wife, Virginia. My condolences and prayers go out for Senator Byrd.

My mother convalesced in a nursing home years ago after a fall that broke her hip. It was named Cain creek, but she named it cripple creek. She had that kind of sense of humor. She, too, is gone.

I'm guessing that, more than anything else, this will probably end the orator of the Senate's career--it will likely sap some of his energy for living.
I'm sorry to hear of his loss.
