From the Editors:
The big story of yesterdays protest rallys across the country over immigration reform was not the numbers of protesters or immigration reform controversies, but the protesters own remarks over what they believed they were fighting for. The remarks illustrate what many may have already known in their gut: the constant exploitation of minorities via partisan politics and far-fetched Supreme Court rulings has lead to a false illusion of rights and national identity.
It's this illusion that rights advocates today find worthy to exploit to advance whatever cause they may be peddling. In the process, millions of desperate people are being lead by a false sense of entitlement. Our foolish broken system no longer serves no one -- it only serves to serve more foolishness.
The real losers in all this are the common American who must bare witness to the foolishness before them. The political pandering; the cries for ever more rights of those who in reality have no standing to demand from this country.
And one must ask: Where were the protests in Latin America yesterday? Surely such a large group of Latinos who left their home countries for a better life here would organizing rallys back home for the very goals they came to seek in this country? There is something uneasy about a group of people who rally for changes for themselves in another country but not their very own.
What follows is a collection of remarks by those who were protesting against immigration reform yesterday. We'll let their own words tell the story, no further comments is needed:
"This is only the beginning," said Alfredo Gutierrez, a former state lawmaker.
"I don't care. I want to help my people. The (Sensenbrenner) law is bad for immigrants. It's time for the sleeping giant to wake," said Felix Lopez.
About 200 converged on the steps of the Georgia Capitol, some wrapped in Mexican flags and holding signs reading: "Don't panic, we're Hispanic" and "We have a dream, too."
"All we desire is those rights the American Supreme Court has said is guaranteed to all persons by the constitution. We want the same equal rights as anyone else in this country, for our children to receive a decent public education," said Roberto Gomez.
Everyone wants to work. All we ask is that they let us continue to work and have a life here. Were not asking for much, said Catalina Sailly.
"Without immigrants, this country wouldn't be anything," said freshman Anna Benitez
"I'm here to make sure that the Mexicans get their freedom, their rights," said Montebello High School student Jeannette Garcia, 15, who held up a sign that said "Freedom."
Clutching Mexican flags, thousands in Phoenix chanted, "Si, se puede," a rallying cry of the United Farm Workers union that means "Yes, we can."
Isidro Ortega of Phoenix, who waived a giant Mexican flag, said "They want to make a law that would make it illegal for me to talk to my wife."
"It's about time we exercised some of our civil rights," said John Chavez.
If we had the opportunity to make ourselves legal, we would have, Juan said.
"I am a third-generation Mexican-American. I am not an undocumented immigrant, but I strongly support my undocumented immigrant brothers and sisters in their struggle for justice and their equal rights," said Marquez, the leader of Students United for Immigrant Rights.
"On the Statue of Liberty it says, 'Give me your tired, your hungry, your poor yearning for liberty,' and that's why we're here," said Michael Rosen, president of the local union representing teachers at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
"The United States of America was built and established for the freedom of people. We have to be united as one, liberty and justice for all mankind," said Magdalena DeLeon.
"It's a disgrace and racist to make it a crime for anyone to live and work in this country. There never should be any any racist laws to prevent anyone from becoming a hard working American citizen," said Mario.
At best, misguided. At worst, a liar.
Ooops, it appeared the article left out some pertinent facts. But I fixed it.
These bastards want our rights they can begin by waiving an American flag, and then finish by immagrating legally. Until then get your goat smellin' arse's back to Mexico!
Just as soon as you become naturalized, get a job, pay taxes. Then we'll talk about your "civil rights". |
Finish the wall.
The nerve of them waving that flag that someone should have grabbed and burned right in front of them. They need to demonstrate against their govt and wave their flags there not in this Country!
Tell everyone you know to tell all compamies you work with that you will not tolerate any flag waving illegal to work on your property, walk out of restaurants and tell them to dump the illegals and maybe you will return, anywhere you are and see a non-english speaking socialist that looks like the flag waving demonstrator seen on the streets of America today walk out if its a restaurant or a hotel.
Dont plan any vacations in any mexican destination!
are you referring to Europe's Islamic problem?
Mexico's ancestry is largely Catholic. It's a different situation altogether.
They just waltz over the Border and organize protests, and my American Politicans end up giving these Illegals what they want.
And what they want is Our Country. What many want as well, is to turn the United States into a third world crap-hole by not assimilating and not learning our language.
sw
I sure wish all these thousands of 'hard-working well-meaning" folks would invest half the effort into improving their own country that do into trying to invade ours. Yes, we are blessed here in the USA, but what we have is not anything magic, or impossible to replicate elsewhere, provided you are willing corporately to do the hard work, with integrity.
If you want the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution, why are so many of you waving Mexican flags?
Well I want to help ,my people FIRST, it is way past time for the sleeping giant to awaken and enforce our laws. Congress and the Presidente should be embarrased by their failure to put a stop to this foolishness. Its bite the bullet now or have a civil war later.
****The political pandering; the cries for ever more rights of those who in reality have no standing to demand from this country. ****
Nuf said!
Muy bien Marquez! Why not go to Mexico with your illegal alien brothers and sisters and help them demand their rights from their own country. What!??? They don't have rights in their own country you say??
LOL
Please call them INVADERS and don't compare them to people who are legal aliens!
President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.
He ignores the many rapes, murders and robberies which might be larger than the murders and money loss at the world trade center.
More Americans are abducted on the border of Mexico than in Iraq!
Start building the fence.
It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
This current crop of politicians are ruining our country. They no longer represent the Americans that voted for them. These people are criminals and should be treated as such.
Give employers of illegals stiff fines and serious prison time. The illegals will quickly deport themselves at their own expense.
