Campaign (Now) Says (Katherine) Harris Won't Turn To Inheritance.
Orlando Sentinel - harris Campaign ^ | Jim Stratton

Posted on 03/25/2006 3:01:00 PM PST by MindBender26

In an effort to jump-start her sputtering Senate campaign, Rep. Katherine Harris went on national television invoking the memory of her late father and saying the money he left her will form the financial foundation of her challenge to Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

Now the Harris campaign says that's not the case.

Campaign spokeswoman Morgan Dobbs said Thursday that Harris will sell her existing assets rather than rely on money from her father, a bank executive who died in January.

The Republican from Longboat Key appeared on national television saying she would use the money left to her by her father to infuse her campaign with a badly needed shot of financing.

The announcement was the centerpiece of her appearance on Fox News, where Harris reaffirmed her commitment to the race.

"I'm going to take his legacy that he gave to me, everything I have, and I'm going to put it in this race," she told Sean Hannity. "I'm going to commit my legacy from my father -- $10 million."

A moment later, Hannity asked, "This is money from your father?"

"Yes," replied Harris.

Hello all, long time lurker, I've decided to throw my two cents in on this one being that I'm a Florida voter. I will be voting for Katherine Harris if she is chosen by the Republican party as their senate candidate, but I do not think she can win ageist Bill Nelson. I don't see any Republican this year with the exception of Gov. Jeb Bush being able to unseat Nelson. Simply put I think she should stay in the congress where she is a shoe-in and wait for an open seat which she might have a shot at. I see Nelson with a safe seat (unfortunately) as long he doesn't do anything stupid to screw it up. Maybe someone can show me some polling data that will change my mind but I doubt it.
So as not to be misunderstood I like Katherine Harris and wish she could win, she did great work in the 2000 debacle.

I'm sorry but I just don't think she's ready for prime time. If ever. She's kind of all over the place.

As I recall, Clayton Williams lost that election because of the joke he told about women and rape. Without that, I think he would have beaten Ma Richard handily. It was a stupid joke, and he should havae known better.

Just thought you would want to know about the wonderful weekend our candidate had:

Orlando Sentinel - Sunday:

"U.S. Senate candidate Katherine Harris slogged through another political morass Saturday when she suggested that one of her most senior advisers had fed embarrassing information to the press.

Appearing at a gun show in Orlando, Harris said that Adam Goodman, her longtime media consultant, had told the St. Petersburg Times that he and chief strategist Ed Rollins were leaving the campaign.

The story, Harris said, was wrong.

"Ed is not leaving my campaign," the Longboat Key Republican said. "Ed Rollins is very committed to my campaign."

The two-term congresswoman, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, then accused Goodman of spreading the story.

"That article basically came from Adam," Harris said, "and it was not accurate."

Asked whether Goodman was still with the campaign, she said: "He is, is, uh . . . heh . . . no comment."

Harris' remarks were surprising, because Goodman has worked with Harris for years and is considered one of her closest advisers. The candidate's words became puzzling when Harris phoned the Orlando Sentinel an hour later with a different story.

She said Goodman was still with the campaign and said "it was wrong" of her to say he leaked information.

"I shouldn't have said that," she said.

Harris could not explain the change or make clear why she had first refused to say whether Goodman was still working with her.

"I don't even know," she said. "That is so not like me."

End of excerpt.

The hits just keep coming!

No one here wants Nelson, but to pretend he is not a formatable opponent is incredibly foolish.

No I don't want Anybody But Harris. I do want someone who can win. She can't.

PS, if you think a Bas Mitzvah ceremony in a synagogue is a social occasion.... well... they don't let you treat real patients, do they.

P.S Massachusetts? Wake up. Read the Bio.

Adios. You're not worth the time.... unless you want to place $100,000 with an escrow agent. I'll put up $300,000. If Harris wins, you get it all. If she is not the winner, I get it all.

Go ahead, mortgage the double-wide. Deal?

Put up or ... go give someone a cholonoscopy.

As I remember, the worst thing was that at some debate or other public event, she extended her hand to shake hands... and Williams wouldn't.

In Texas, when anyone, ESPECIALLY A WOMAN, offers to shake hands, you do!

I think Reagan or H.W. was Prez and the campaign begged WH to send him on some emergency mission to somewhere for last three weeks of October.

Word was, if they could keep him out of Texas, they could win!

:~)

1990 Texas gubernatorial race

While Texas had proven to be a stronghold to the Democratic party throughout the 20th century, the state had trended to the right. Sensing opportunity, Williams began his run for Governor of Texas.

Williams spent freely from his personal fortune, running a "Good Old Boy" campaign [2] initially appealing to conservatives. Prior to a series of legendary gaffes, he was leading Richards by as much as 20 points in the polls, and was in striking distance of becoming only the second Republican governor of Texas since Reconstruction.

But in his first widely-publicized misstep, Williams failed to shake Ann Richards' hand in a public debate, an act seen as uncouth. Several weeks later, Williams made an infamous joke to reporters, likening bad weather to rape, quipping, "as long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

Even after both of these political snafus, Williams only narrowly lost the election to Ann Richards.

This is from a google search.

I had forgotten about the handshake--but will never forget that "joke"--I remember groaning loudly when I heard it. I did not vote for governor that year.

As a Texan, you know, "Men just don't do that sort of thing."

More from Google:

"Texas Republicans had high hopes that this rootin' tootin' cowboy multimillionaire would take over the Governor's Mansion in 1990. But they would have had better luck if Claytie had been more like cowboy Tom Mix, the silent film star.

It seems that Claytie's jawbone wasn't connected to his brain bone, so he came up a few cows short of a stampede. In other words, he wasn't elected. He was no match for quick-witted State Treasurer Ann Richards. You remember her -- the 1988 Democratic National Convention keynoter who brought down the house when she said George Bush was born with a silver foot in his mouth.

Unlike Ann, Claytie could never make it in standup. Talking to reporters about the weather -- which most folks would consider a safe subject -- he joked that bad weather is like rape: "as long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." Sounds like the boy did some prison time.

Tings got worse when a convicted rapist repeated Claytie's bad joke and got sentenced just a week before the election.

Then Claytie bragged about his days as a young buck when he crossed the border into Mexico to pick up prostitutes. Well, so much for the Mexican vote. The ladies weren't too impressed with that, either.

And his extreme wealth became a liability when he admitted that he had paid no income taxes in 1986. His excuse: he had a bad year. Folks don't want to hear that when you're a multimillionaire."

Oh, well........

Anyone remember how Nelson voted on 2006 Patriot Act reauthorization?

If he voted for it in 2001 and against in 2006, we could have another "I actually voted for it before I voted against it" hit piece.

Robin Higgins could kill him on that point/issue.

My my my, you really are a friend of the MSM !

Why don't you go work for the New York Press & Media(aka Moscow on the Hudson) ?

You are zinging in on every little typo, innuendo, uncrossed 'T', undotted 'I', etc .

With the likes of you, who needs MoveOn.org or 'Mediamatters' . .

I am going to wait for the facts to clear and for direct statements from the Harris campaign !

Why do you trust that Orlando Sentinel article ?

From the opening statement, it is obvious they are very biased against her .

SINCE WHEN DID DIRECT CONTRADICTORY QUOTES FROM THE CANDIDATE BECOME "TYPOS, UNCROSSED Ts AND UNDOTTED Is.?"

>With the likes of you, who needs MoveOn.org or 'Mediamatters' . .

>I am going to wait for the facts to clear and for direct statements from the Harris campaign !

WHEN THE STORY REVOLVES AROUND AND REPORTS A SERIES OF DIRECT QUOTES FROM THE CANDIDATE, AND REPEATS A SERIES OF BEHAVIOURS THAT HAVE BEEN ONGOING IN THIS CAMPAIGN, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT, A NOTARIZED STATEMENT?

THESE WERE NOT JUST DIRECT STATEMENTS AND QUOTES FROM THE CANDIDATE'S CAMPAIGN, THEY WERE DIRECT STATEMENTS AND QUOTES FROM THE CANDIDATE HERSELF!

>From the opening statement, it is obvious they are very biased against her.

WHY IS QUOTING THE CANDIDATE DIRECTLY A SIGN OF BIAS?

Tell me, you really are Bill Nelson, aren't you, trying to ensure that an easy to beat opponent faces you in November.

Please tell me something Marc, what has she done right recently?

Please tell me, other than name recognition, (which is 2 to 1 NEGATIVE) why is she even a possible candidate?

#1. Illegal campaign contributions
#2. Announcements on national TV contradicted two days later.
#3. Firing people, then unfiring them an hour later.

The MSM doesn't need to be biased against her. They just have to print her daily self-destructive activities to continue the disaster!

Katherine Harris is self-destructing in public, and no A-class Republican is stepping up to the place. Harris reminds me of another loser, McBride.

I'm sick of Nelson, and I don't see any viable alternative out there.

I can't believe we're giving away this US Senate seat to the Democrats without a fair fight.

You wish. Katherine Harris is very attractive, and the dem's attempts to paint her as ugly is so old. If you don't have the ability to think for yourself, you probably shouldn't be voting.

George,

My feelings exactly. Things are so bad I'm suggesting Claude Kirk! < NOT >

Seriously, I've got a dark horse candidate.

Robin Higgins is a retired USMC Lt.Col, former Florida Director of Veterans Affairs, former Asst. Director, U.S. Veterans Affairs, and in a time when terrorism prevention is a +17 Republican issue, she is the widow of Marine Corps Lt. Col Rich Higgins.

Col Higgins was serving as a UN "peacekeeper" in Lebanon, when he was kidnapped by Islamic terrorists who then brutally tortured him. Finally, they stripped him nude and hanged him, all on videotape... which they showed with great pride throughout SWA.

She has ISSUES that she can beat Nelson on, especially since I think Nelson voted against the re-auth. of the Patriot Act.

Since Nelson voted for the Patriot Act in 2001 and against it this year, we could even create another "I actually voted for it before I voted against it" commercial.

Some backgrund:

There are really "five Floridas" for demographic voting purposes.

1 Hispanic South Florida
2 Retired, mainly Jewish Southeast Florida
3 Retired, mainly non-Jewish Southwest Florida
4 Industrial I-4, along the interstate highways from Tampa to Orlando, Daytona and Jacksonville, It's a lot of Yupps, Dinks, etc.
5 The Panhandle, AKA the Redneck Riviera, where most cars have an NRA window decal

To win statewide in Florida, you need to win at least three of those zones.

Robin Higgins wins with the SW retired crowd big time 58-40
She sweeps the Redneck Riviera 62-35
She does 54-44 in Tampa to Jax
She takes away Nelson's strength in Jewish SE Florida with her strong stand against, (and personal experience with,) Islamic terrorism. Probably loses there 46-48
She even probably wins the Hispanic Miami vote with Senator Mel Martinez, and the Diaz-Billard Congresscritter brothers working for her and the strong patriotic stance of many Cubans who remember Castro. Call is 47-46.

Statewide? Easily 54%+

Statewide, she also has the Soccer Moms locked on security issues (remember, security issues are a +17 for us) and every military vet, (I.E. most of us down here) are out working our butt off for her.

Who except the Gays and Labor are working for Nelson?.. and Big Labor is almost meaningless here.

She loses the Black vote 80-20, but this isn't a Presidential year and we will ensure no one runs against Corinne Brown or Alcee Hhastings for Congress, so the Black turnout will be very low. What Black man is going to take time off work to vote for Bill Nelson?

Like I said, 54+, possibly even 55,56%

Harris Courts GOP Base in Central Florida

By TRAVIS REED
The Associated Press

ORLANDO -- The roughly 100 people packed into a fairgrounds building for a concealed carry handgun class looked up blankly Saturday as U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris entered.

Hands blackened by fingerprinting ink, they listened, many with seeming half-interest, as Harris talked about her political record, gun rights, making President Bush's tax cuts permanent and helping small businesses.

They erupted into applause when weapons instructor and Pasco County Republican Chairman Bill Bunting told them of Harris' A+ rating with the National Rifle Association.

"I'd vote for her in a heartbeat. I didn't think that before seeing what she's about," said Jim Myers, a 57-year-old disabled military veteran.

A week and a half after reaffirming her candidacy on national television and pledging $10 million of her own money to run it, Harris continued trying to shore up the GOP base in Florida on Saturday.

Her "grassfire campaign" for Senate stretched from breakfast in Kissimmee to an Orlando gun show, where Myers took the concealed carry class, and a barbecue later in Daytona Beach.
