I've come to Iraq to embed with U.S. troops stationed in Ramadi, and Baghdad is a stopover. I'm hoping to get on a military helicopter flight there tonight. {{SNIP}} I haven't been to the Palestine Hotel, where AP's Baghdad offices are located, in a year. After a suicide bomber rammed through the high blast walls surrounding the hotel complex a few months ago, the place is still a wreck.

Today in Baghdad alone, nearly 20 are dead in drive-by shootings, roadside bombings and sectarian violence. Nearly everybody here has a tragic story to tell, of friends and family being killed or kidnapped, of staying in the hotel with us for fear of their own lives. Many have fled to nearby countries."
In short, his 'reporters' are former Baath intelligence or others whose friends and family probably had close (and lucrative) relations with Saddam's regime: that's why they are targets and can afford to hide out in Amman or Damascus.
A month ago it was all "insurgent attacks," now it's all "sectarian violence." The facts change to support the narrative.
An old grof sargeant must do what he must do. Stay safe where possible. Who knows. This guy may get so unhinged once he sees how great you guys are he may find he cannot write anything but good things.

And...and there are IEDs exploding on EVERY STREET and mortars and rockets just FLYING THROUGH THE AIR ALL OVER THE PLACE and there's this HUGE CIVIL WAR going on and this place is DOOMED, I tell ya! It's DOOMED!!

Those "journalists" must just HATE it when there's someone there who's telling the truth. I'm sure they detest being kept honest.
I know that probably sounds like a cliche now, but please make sure your men know that we recognize their courage as well as the justice (and difficulty) of the cause for which they fight.
