Angelides proposes tax changes (INCREASES) to raise teacher pay

State Treasurer Phil Angelides said Friday that as governor he would close corporate tax loopholes and raise taxes on the highest income earners to increase education funding for K-12 schools, the same tax proposals he's made to cut tuition at California's public colleges. Speaking at a Capitol rally organized by the California Federation of Teachers to criticize Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his education funding policies, Angelides called for higher teacher salaries and a full commitment to the state's Proposition 98 guarantee.

"It's time for a governor who's actually willing to ask multimillionaires to chip in, ask corporations to chip in, so we can have the best-educated kids and the best economy in the world," Angelides said.

Angelides also has proposed higher taxes on high-income earners and closing corporate tax loopholes to finance lower tuition. And he backs director Rob Reiner's Proposition 82, a June ballot initiative to increase taxes on individuals earning more than $400,000 and couples earning more than $800,000 to pay for preschool for any family that wants it.

Arnold would not be my first choice but that is as good as we will get.

There is the rub isn't it? Why is he as good as we are going to get? When you have party leaders who actively deep six good candidates, who could win and would win, based solely on perpetuating the notion that conservatives can't win, you have to wonder. At what point do you draw the line? At what point do you take back your vote? I can not vote for a donkey in an elephant suit. You want my vote, give me an elephant.

Mister Angelides will never, ever understand the dynamic nature of an economy.

No left wing ideologue understands that a vibrant economy, with lower tax rates will yield greater tax revenues than one that taxes its producers to the point of exhaustion.

As much as "the rich" are being taxed/penalized in CA, I'm wondering when they will start to leave the state. Or has that already begun? I know that if I were worth millions, I would get damn sick and tired of being singled out and punished for my success.

The "rich" have the means of leaving the state to escape the taxation. They are a small number of people. They pay a massively disproportionate percentage of the total tax revenues. A small movement out of the state will punch big holes in the revenue stream.

I saw the writing on the wall in 1999 and relocated from San Diego to Pocatello, Idaho. Damn good decision. Instead of wallowing in debt, cursing traffic and wondering when the next anti-gun law would make me a felon, I'm sitting in a 3900 sq ft house on 1/3 acre that I own free and clear. The lower cost of living has allowed me to invest in another house for the purpose of generating passive income. The education establishment in Idaho still consumes the majority of tax revenues, but it isn't nearly as ridiculous as California.

I wouldn't be troubled by it. As long as the GOP insists on nominating liberals instead of bona-fide conservatives, California's agony will simply be prolonged. I don't want socialism in drips and drabs; I oppose it but if I have to put up with it, its best to have it in one big gulp. That way the job of restoring this state will be a lot easier once people see that doesn't work.

I have. Most of this state is red save a few high population density areas. I don't have a theory I have facts. I have voted Republican in every election but they have lost my vote and may lose my registration as well. They deny me the candidates I want and literally force me to vote for those I don't, all for their own personal political advancement. The party leadership in this state is the problem, not the conservative voter.

Dov Sundheim and the party brass doesn't understand the Republican voter. Otherwise they wouldn't spend so much time and effort telling conservatives to sit down and shut up. Hey, if that's the way the party honchos feel, they shouldn't be surprised when the base fails to show up in November.

I live in a large city and also in the world of reality.
You might do well to move to a red state but then you would have nothing the gripe about.
You will get half of San Diego & orange counties to vote conservative. LA, Frisco and Bay area, Santa Barbara and surrounding area you will get liberal.
If you lived in a large city you would understand what is going on.
You can keep kvetching as you usually do but reality is reality. Live with it or move.

Unless the Democraps are defeated this November things will not get better. American capitalists will have to look elsewhere for success. Mexico has just discovered a huge oil deposit off their east coast in the Gulf. The news is that Mexico is going to build the largest port facilities on their west coast. Both of these projects are beyond the "reach" or control of the Democrap Party. When these projects succeed our motto for are young should be "Go south young man". Whenever the conservative wing of the Republican party wins out at the nominations, we end up with candidates like Simon and Lundgren, who get beaten by the Dem candidate by a 2 to 1 margin. Yet some never learn, and they want to keep doing the same thing. That is the reason there are hardly any Republicans elected into statewide offices and the Legislature is overwhelmingly Dem. The Republicans keep running candidates, who can't appeal to moderates.

Considering the demographics, this is a prescription for failure.

Now we finally have Arnold, a Republican, who also appeals to moderates and even Dems, so some so-called conservatives are working tirelessly to have him defeated by socialist Angelides, who will complete California's destruction.

You seem to understand the situation perfectly, unlike some who claim to be conservatives, but want to see Dems take over California completely.

The state's wealthiest taxpayers already have received billions in tax breaks from the Bush administration, Angelides said.

"We can ask them to give some of that back," he said.

"Ask"? Sounds a hell of a lot like "from each according to his means, to each according to his needs" to me. Besides, higher taxes is not "asking to give some of that back", it's telling those who already pay a bulk of the taxes to bend over, grab the ankles and...you get the idea.

If Arnold is smart, and I think he is, he would mention how the tax cuts have actually INCREASED tax revenue, not decreased it. These barely masked communists/socialists play the same game: class warfare, misdirection, and preying upon the ignorance of the voter base.

"Vote for me! I'll raise taxes and take things away from you!" No politician would say it like that. (Well, Hillary did, indirectly, but I digress.) Instead, they couch it in terms like "funding education", or "funding childcare" or "providing preschool for everyone".

What happens when those who pay the majority of taxes feel that it is no longer profitable to do the extra work, take the extra risks, and to strengthen the economy by providing jobs, because the government is jacking them on taxes?

Who will suffer if governments keep taking? It won't be the rich. After all, reduced to its basic element, how do you accumulate wealth? Spend less than you earn, and continue to do so.If government continues to take, then the entrepreneur will also take...take less risks, invest less money, offer less jobs.

They will still have their money, and it's not because they're greedy. It's because they are practicing good economic policy. It's the "little guy", that the Left so claims to cherish, that gets screwed.

I'm just a high school graduate, and no MBA, CPA, or financial planner. But I do know basic economics, and my basic knowledge tells me that when you lower taxes, you increase the amount of money that a person has available to spend on other (taxable) items. The consumer gets product, the producer gets income, the government gets money (that they will mostly spend unwisely). Everyone's happy. Then some yahoo comes along and decides that he should be the arbiter of what is "fair share" and what is not, and that he should be given your vote, so he can take away from one, and give to another.

Give me a day looking at the overall picture and I could cut half a billion to a billion dollars in a heartbeat in wasted large salaries going to superintendents and HR directors and a load of other freeloaders sucking at the teat of the taxpayer funded malarkey called public education.

Not with a Democrat state legislature, you won't. Your heart is in the right place, "A", but the liberals, in whatever party they find themselves, would rather die than give up their welfare state (or the "Two Americas" class-warfare canard).

And just looking at it pragmatically, who is going to bust their "six" working 40 hours per week, when they can get the same amount for doing nothing? I like to work, I'm grateful for it, but I can't say that if I could get the same amount not working, that I get by waking up at 5am, commuting an hour to work, riding a desk for nine hours, then fighting stop-and-stop traffic for another hour+, that I would choose to work for it.

By the way, that doesn't make me lazy, it's basic economics. What do we do when we "work", anyway? We exchange time for money. Sounds like...well, never mind. If I can get money without exchanging time, well who wouldn't take that deal? But I digress.)

So I know what you mean, and it is commendable, but with a Democrat legislature, plus the useless Senators and mostly useless Leftist Representatives we have here, it's almost impossible to carry out.
