BAGHDAD , Iraq – Multi-National Forces – Baghdad Soldiers reported an audible explosion in southern Baghdad March 23.

Upon arrival, Soldiers from 8th Squadron, 10th Cavalry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, found remains of a man approximately 50 meters from emplaced mortar shells.

After an initial investigation, officials concluded the victim was possibly killed by a roadside bomb he was emplacing in a hole.

Soldiers also reported 15 holes lined up in a row, approximately two feet wide and six feet apart.

An explosive ordnance disposal unit was called to clear the area of other possible improvised-explosive devices.

This incident is under investigation by Iraqi authorities.

Seems odd. Wouldn't it take some time to dig out all those holes? I would have thought that in setting these roadside bombs that they would not want to expose themselves anymore than necessary. Longer they stay there to set up their IED's the easier it is to spot them.

Any fool with a bomb (excuse me, "sactified martyr") can lay just one IED, pop it, and claim jihad! on us.

But a daisy-chain rig is meant to take out more than one vehicle in a convoy. Damages two or three, block the road and cause confusion, and set up the convoy for a direct fire ambush, RPG's and automatic fire.

This guy meant business. And lighting him up stopped a whole lot of problems down the road.

Thanks for the info. Having to set so many explosives must involve time, time when the individual is exposed. That would, it seems to me, involve passive indifferance by anyone around.

Or a lot of collusion by the locals. Or fear and intimidation.

Both have worked in the past.

"What I have a problem with is how these people can dig all the two foot holes and no one see's them."

Excellent point. If this is indeed true it would only deepen my suspicions and cynicism towards all of Islam. If we had or needed any "good guy" Muslims they are certainly needed in Iraq.

A Muslim is for the most part a terrorist, acting either directly or implicitly.

You are probably correct, but my point is that citizens of the area do see them planting these things and by their silence, condone it.

I thought the most intersting line in the story was that it was "under investigation." What's left to investigate? You don't suppose that they might try and round up his associates, do you?

I really dont see much sense in arresting anyone and then turning them loose. To me, shot while trying to escape seems a better plan.
