Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel)

Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel). March 24, 2006 -- Unidentified programmers have hacked the Intel version of Mac OS X to enable it to boot a Dell PC. A file called the "JaS4.2b patch" can be used to create a customized installer DVD for installing on a Dell PC.

A website called MacaDell describes the patch. The MacDell site has also has a page that describes how to use the JaS4.2b patch to create a customized installer disc for Mac OS X.

Using the hack is illegal because it breaks Apple’s Mac OS X license agreement, which specifies that the operating system be run on an “Apple-labeled computer.”

According to MacaDell, work on the hack began when a Russian hacker known as Maxxuss cracked the encrypted security layer in Mac OS X that usually requires the software to be installed on a certain Mac model. Other hackers added to the work, and a programmer known as JaS put the work together in the JaS4.2b patch.

The hack emulates the EFI boot firmware found in Intel-based Macs. It also emulates an instruction set called SSE3 in order to support processors older than the Dual Core used in the Intel Macs. MacaDell reports that the hack doesn’t work on every computer, and doesn’t support some functions, such as wireless networking and certain audio and video cards.

At this point, the Intel version of Mac OS X is only available with the purchase of an Intel-based Mac.

You said -- "Sorry if I don't see the need to tear everyone else down in order to build myself up."

I beg your pardon..., I'm not one of those computer boxes...

[P.S. -- my name is not Macintosh, either -- I just use them...]

You said -- "f they could get companies to make drivers for thir hardware..."

Did you change your mind and decide to go down to Cupertino after all? I thought you weren't ever going to get one of those OS Xs.

Ahhhh..., I get it, try to sell them on a dumb idea and sink the company... that's it. I got it now...

Sink the company? How? because they expand their user base?

Because there's no margin in software, but plenty in their hardware.

As you said, plenty of people will overpay for that.

People overpay for Windows they will overpay for OS X as well.

Apple could still market and sell hardware.

Now we've come full circle again. This was the point at which I said that I was sure that Steve Jobs was waiting for you to advise him..., and I was waiting to receive your card in the mail from Cupertino.

But, then again, why go through it all over again. Just scroll up and you can redo the conversation from up above... Same stuff...., nothing has changed, in the last day.

The money they are making is made on iPod and related items (iTunes store). They aren't making any more money on their computer products than they ever have.

Maybe Jobs is just afraid of competition I guess, maybe they fear given the choice people would choose Windows over OS X, imagine the horror! :)

I just don't know. Everybody says that the Apple business model is doomed, and in the 90s when Jobs was gone it looked that way. But since then he must laugh about it all the way to the bank.
I just don't know. I would like to see the OS no longer tied to the hardware cuz I am not fond of the Apple "premium" just to be able to run the software I use like Final Cut Pro. Oh well, at least I'm not paying the Avid premium.

NEW YORK--The PowerPC alliance of IBM, Motorola and Apple Computer will try to build momentum for 1996 starting this week with a series of developments, including the long-awaited debut of IBM's first desktop systems, Apple Computer's initial PCI-based machines and product introductions or demonstrations from the likes of Zenith Data Systems (ZDS), Canon, FirePower Systems and others.

While the new hardware will be built around the RISC-endowed PowerPC 604, the PowerPC 603e and PowerPC 601, still to be seen is how much the PowerPC mainstream applications base has been improved--either by efforts involving Windows NT or by moving x86 applications to the platform through software emulation. Several software and hardware options to run x86 applications have been explored by IBM and Motorola, with some industry observers hoping for a surprise announcement this week. IBM still expects OS/2 for the PowerPC to be ready by September.

With Microsoft last week announcing availability of Windows NT 3.51, PowerPC systems vendors will begin bundling the operating system with shipments. Still, it may not be a panacea. While Windows NT may be on the upswing, much of the market is still Intel-based and other RISC competitors to the PowerPC have a big lead in available applications.

At the Computex show earlier this month members of the Taiwan NewPC Consortium indicated that PowerPC-optimized versions of Microsoft's Office suite of applications are still not ready to ship because of problems related to the Visual C++ programming tools.

You said -- " They aren't making any more money on their computer products than they ever have."

What I would like to see (on those figures) is how it all shakes out when the Intel Chips are all in there and it's done, plus all the software conversions. What I want to see, from that point forward is how the sales are going. I suspect that they will be down during the interim, but that they will be up dramatically, after everything is all shaken out and running smoothly. But, that's going to take a few more months before we can see that. There are good things coming, financially, with Apple.

And then, there's this whole media integration thing, which is also going to pull in a lot of computer boxes, too. All together, it's going to be pretty good, I think. But, we'll wait and see what the "numbers" bring in a year to two years. Time will tell...

Are we starting over again? Are we at the top, half-way down, or near the bottom. I just have to scroll back up and see where we are. Going around in a circle like this and covering the same ground the very next day gets one's head to spinning around.

Save me the trouble.... just pretend I'm answering today -- from what I said yesterday... that'll work...

Yeah, it's not like anyone could make money just selling operating systems.

Well said, HAL9000. I think some folks misunderstand the interaction and interoperability between applications, browsers, and operating systems.

Right tool, right job - you got it!

I'm not saying their model is doomed just think they could do better by expanding into the PC market. If they had more users
they could get more software made for the OS more people would switch to the OS...
