Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel)

Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel). March 24, 2006 -- Unidentified programmers have hacked the Intel version of Mac OS X to enable it to boot a Dell PC. A file called the "JaS4.2b patch" can be used to create a customized installer DVD for installing on a Dell PC.

A website called MacaDell describes the patch. The MacDell site has also has a page that describes how to use the JaS4.2b patch to create a customized installer disc for Mac OS X.

Using the hack is illegal because it breaks Apple’s Mac OS X license agreement, which specifies that the operating system be run on an “Apple-labeled computer.”

According to MacaDell, work on the hack began when a Russian hacker known as Maxxuss cracked the encrypted security layer in Mac OS X that usually requires the software to be installed on a certain Mac model. Other hackers added to the work, and a programmer known as JaS put the work together in the JaS4.2b patch.

The hack emulates the EFI boot firmware found in Intel-based Macs. It also emulates an instruction set called SSE3 in order to support processors older than the Dual Core used in the Intel Macs. MacaDell reports that the hack doesn’t work on every computer, and doesn’t support some functions, such as wireless networking and certain audio and video cards.

At this point, the Intel version of Mac OS X is only available with the purchase of an Intel-based Mac.

Just don't say that Apple doesn't make hardware but Dell does, since they operate the same on the hardware side.

Again they could keep up this marketing strategy even if they move in to the PC market.

What does that mean? Move into the Intel market? They already have. Move into the personal computer market? They've been doing that for decades.

neither one of them "make" hardware, they just assemble it. Dell makes a ton of money just doing that without the software.

You're parsing and mincing the word "make." That's irritating.

Marketing strategy, you know... "Buy Dell its better than gateway..." blah blah blah, they could still do the same thing and still sell their hardware, Mac fans will still buy it.

well, I "make" my own PC's, the same as apple or dell does.

I buy the case, power supply, motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, floppy, video card, dvd burners and assemble it myself.

Make $! That is their goal. LOL Dell,HP,IBM, and Gateway are not beholden to Microsoft! snatch up some of the market share for yourself.

The problem with MSFT is that at they frequently have only $5 Billion to spend on and R&D project that should cost $5 million.

You're parsing words again. Do you mean a personal computer, or do you mean an IBM-compatible wintel personal computer?

Dell's failure rate is below that of the component parts it uses. The government used to buy desktop computers from companies with failure rates of 40% and on up; they're so happy to have Dell around it's unbelievable.

No, I don't dew my own clothes. But I and many other people choose to assemble our own computers, because we want the best hardware that we can get and not some crappy stuff that Dell or Apple try to force on us. Some of us like to have options.

How is this possible? because it's inside a dell case the parts made from another company aren't going to break? i.e. the Western Digital hard drive in a Dell is the same one that goes in Gateway, IBM, or HP computers or Apple for that matter.
