The point is that the French themselves view us as an enemy, basing their foreign policy positions solely on how best to counteract the US, so whether we view them as such or not doesn't matter, except that we should not be fooled into thinking they are our friends when they don't think so.

Would they be glad that "You Americans have become aware of the calculus of the Franco-US relations?" or whine that "Oh no, the Yanquis have figured out where we really stand now and we can no longer deceive them!"?
